Regional trains boarding in Washington is always such a cattle call. Can you get Red Cap service to take you to a regional train ? We will be boarding a thru train, [ # 99 ] south bound. Not as able as we used to be, somewhat slower walkers. [ Breathing problems. ] Is there any priority boarding for regionals ?

WAS Union Station usually boards seniors, handicapped, and families with small children first, then general boarding. So, even if you can't get a red cap, board when they call for the groups to board early explaining that you have breathing problems if they ask.

Since you mention your a slow walker ask for a Red Cap. They sometimes can get you down before the cattle call. If you need a cart I believe in DC they offer carts. Not 100% sure.
Yes they do!

I ask for a Red Cap all the time, they drive me out on the cart - and many time get there even before the (thru) train arrives!

I use WAS Redcap's quite often. There is a Redcap station across from the Amtrak Information Booth on the gateside section of the station. You can certainly utilize priority boarding at the gate but I personally would use a Redcap and tip them accordingly. I tip $5 for both me and my wife with 2 bags. It is money well spent to get a good seat and avoiding the cattle call.

Since you will traveling southbound you will be boarding on a lower level track. When using Redcaps on all of my trips via the lower level they have taken us to the tracks on a seated trolley. Very little walking involved, an extra plus.

Let me know via Private Message (PM) if you are traveling before 2/29/12. If so, I will send you a Club Acela (CA) Pass. You can reserve a Redcap at checkin in the lounge and you can have the Redcap take you from the lounge to trackside.

How do the carts get down to track level?
