Hi all,

Will be arrive very late into LA from the San Joaquin bus at 12:30am on a Monday and realizing public transit has shut down, does anyone have any experience getting a cab out front of the station in the wee hours? Should we call ahead to a cab company while on the bus? Other options? We have to get to Pasadena. (and the late bus does not go through there).

thanks!

Rob

There's a cab stand at the west entrance to LAUS and there's usually a line of cabs at all hours of the day (there's very few big cab stands in LA.) I would think you would be okay not calling dispatch.

As for other options... I highly suggest using Uber. Their prices tend to be cheaper than a taxi and the service is better. They can also book you a Town Car for a few dollars more. (I'd usually suggest the Metro Gold Line.... but the last train northbound leaves LAUS at 12:15a.)

The bus is discharge only at the previous stops so perhaps it could be early. Never mind, just checked the fast few days tracking it and its been late (in the range of 30 minutes to two hours) the past few days.

If there are no passengers scheduled to board or discharge at some of the earlier stops, those stops are skipped. You might just make the last Gold Line to Pasadena.

Thanks for the feedback! Guess we will try Bruce's idea first in case we are early. Glad to know there will still be cabs. I did look into Uber butnot sure how reliable to cell service will be on the bus ride to set that up an hour or so before arrival.

The alternative was parking the car at LAUPT for 11 days at 10 bucks a day. Ugh!

Cheers,

Rob

The Gold Line is definitely the least expensive option if you are running early.

Also, Uber won't accept a booking an hour before you need it. You book the trip when you need it and it almost always takes less than 10 minutes for the vehicle to arrive. I would book it right as you pull into Union Station.

The 5804 bus can drop you off in Glendale about 15 minutes earlier (12:15 AM) if that would get you to Pasadena a little sooner with a shorter taxi ride.
Reminds me of a situation many, MANY years ago when I was connecting from the CS to the SWC (back in the days when they made a legitimate connection, and the SWC ran via Pasadena). The CS was a bit late, and so the conductor announced that everyone connecting to the SWC would be transported bus from the Glendale stop to San Bernadino to connect with the SWC. But, since I new that we weren't TOO late, and the SWC would stop in Pasadena, I chose instead a personal taxi from the Glendale station to the Pasadena station, boarded my sleeper there, then went straight to dinner.

I think I was just finishing my desert when we pulled into San Bernadino, and I got to enjoy the climb to Cajon Pass in my darkened room rather than in the brightly lit dining room.

I second this recommendation. The app showed us where our driver was as soon as we booked it, and we never waited more than 5-10 minutes for them to arrive. It's a GREAT app. We used it several times while in San Francisco last June.

I was just curious (more for myself than anything) and looked up the LA Night Bus Network. The 180 runs from Glendale (just a block north of the Amtrak station) to Pasadena stopping in Glendale (time point is after the train station so some minutes before) hourly at :44 minutes past the hour at that time of night. If your trying to get to downtown Pasadena it could be another option.
