This appears to be distinguishing characteristic of Amtrak passengers, or at least some of them, who carefully follow the progress of their presumptive train from days or weeks before travel. I have seldom heard of travelers on other modes or indeed even travelers on other railroads indulging in such practice. :)

I'm guessing he's watching the train he will actually be boarding tomorrow. But, you're right, we do like to track our trains. :)

Well yes I do watch carefully when I catch 22 out of STL. One year I didn't and woke up to a 7 hour delay out of little rock. Explaining this and UP to gf and 2 non railfans on their first amtrak trip was not fun. Have had about 10 ot runs on 22 STL-CHI. So I was surprised today. Lol.

My last two returns to LA from Temple on #21/#1 (actually #421) I set up text alerts through the Amtrak Status Map site. I was kept informed of the status of #21 as it approached Temple and #1 as it approached SAS from the NOL. SAS of course is where our sleeper was switched from 21 to 1.

So True ...... I still find it funny when an airline passenger, who just arrived at the airport during a thunderstorm, is shocked their flight is delayed.

So why the delay? Slow orders? I believe this is dark territory isn't?
Taylor is the UP Crew Base and yard for the New Braunfels to Hearn run. Since most of Austin has single tracking including the Bridge across Lady Bird Lake ( the old MoPac route), Freight and Rock Trains get priority from the Omaha Dispatchers and the Eagles are put onto sidings even when on time into Austin and Taylor!

Arrived stl 11:33 and departed 1:05 Additional delay was caused by switching the Stl-chi coach and adding private cars

The scas for both sleepers were incompetent. The cars were not numbered properly. The second sleeper had 2232 as the line number. This is the line number for the transition sleeper. Passengers from both cars milled about on the platform in confusion.

The transition sleeper was spotted beyond the end of the platform. The door was open and the stool was on the gravel. Passengers detrained and I approched the door. The sca yelled at me to wait. He said rooms were not ready. He started to close the door. I told him that I was not hauling my luggage up the stairs in the other car and back down the stairs in the transition sleeper. I put my luggage on the transition sleeper and walked back to the other sleeper and boarded. I took gf to the diner and we were seated immediately for lunch. If I had followed the instructions of the sca I would have been waitlisted for lunch. Diner crew was great.

When I Returned from lunch the sca came and apologize. He told me that he could not load passengers while the engine was being fueled because it was unsafe. This fueling issue was not mentioned at time of boarding. I did feel that boarding from the gravel was unsafe. Thats why I insisted on putting my luggage on but went back and boarded the other sleeper. I did not want gf boarding there.

The sca in the other sleeper was at least polite. When I boarded there the door was not attendded. I advised him that he had passengers waiting on the platform and that his car number was Reading 2232 and not 2220.

I have never heard of pax not being allowed to board a train during refueling. Every refueling stop I have been at we come and go and I often walk up to the front of the Baggage car to get a pic or 2; sometimes the refueling crew motions me on up and lets me in on what is going on.
