We are on the north bound 20 today and to our surprise we have car 8400 the viewliner dinner. It looks nice but the crew says it is harder to work than the heritage ones.

That's disappointing. You'd think they would try to make the cars easier to work, not harder.

How is it that the baggage cars are (presumably) simpler than the diners, and they've been in testing longer, but a diner is the first to make it into revenue service? (Or have some Viewliner bags made it into service without my noticing?)

8400 is the prototype. It's been in revenue for some time now. The new ones have not been sent out for testing yet.

Hope Deborah is your LSA, my last trip on the Crescent was such a delight with her and her fellow diner crew.

I've been fortunate to have eaten in 8400 on the Lake Shore and the Meteor and found it a very nice experience! It is comfortable, clean and the OBS that I had all claimed to like working it!

The Heritage Diners are Historic, some are in better shape than others, but all things considered I think most of us look forward to all of the Viewliner IIs being put into service!

Hmm, wonder if that means I'll have 8400 next week when I travel!
They said it is assigned to this route for now. So doing the math. It will be on southbound Monday. Back in Nola Tuesday leaving Wednesday and so forth.

Is 8400 the prototype from the original Viewliner-I order, or am I thinking of another number? If it's the V-I prototype, then it's been around for about 20 years, which I ate in during the 90's, also on the 19/20 consist, and yes, it was a pleasant well-appointed experience.

I will let you know. She is in a blue ball gown. And I'm in a black tux. I'm looking forward to seeing this train. Thanks giys

It may be but they said they just redid it again a year or two ago. It is all LED lighting and very clean lines.

Yeah he's lucky cause she said yes! Hiya and I'm a lucky girl that he asked and he is wondering what the engine number was and I think the crew has some happy Tummys right now!!! We baked them cupcakes for Valentines since I made him way too many!!

114 is the main engine #

Well this trip just got interesting. We lost hep power about 20 min ago and now they said on the scanner they have a problem with the #2 engine. We are crawling to a siding to try to restart it. Fingers crossed as it is 9 out side and getting cold in here.

The 8400 has been around for almost 30 years. It started running on the Capitol Limited in 1988, stored in 2003 and rebuilt and returned to service in 2011.

I would venture to say that most travelers here will be happy when the new Viewliner II diners will start being placed in service. The double windows, new furnishings and better lighting will present a brighter more open look but they might be colder in winter than the Heritage units. The unfortunate news is that the menu will not be improved.
