Interesting article, although I'd point out that it was Gov. Christie who shut down an earlier iteration of the Gateway Tunnel saying that he could not guarantee it wouldn't turn into a funding problem for NJ. And then he pocketed the funds set aside for the project to fund highway improvements and bail out a tax hole he'd dug in the state. I find it rich when he threatens to hold back NJ transit payments when the terminal and tracks belong to Amtrak - don't pay, no problem. Enjoy your morning swim...

Really this is just a microcosm of Amtrak as a whole. Equipment is wearing out, past it's intended service life, and no replacements are on the horizon. As discussed in another thread about spare equipment, many cars have become bad ordered due to wrecks which has reduced capacity. The P40 - 42's are all high mileage, and really need replacement, and many of the cars in the fleet are older than the cars that Amtrak started out service with in 1971. It's really a testament to Amtrak's maintenance teams that the cars operate as reliably as they do.

I'd think the person(s) who caused the train wreck should be responsible for it... or get train insurance.
Ha. Ha. Ha.
Any realistic ideas here for how "train insurance" would work for the member of the general public?

Some airline union contracts have a hold harmless clause but the union(s) will sometimes have excessive awards above that limit. Now for airlines without pilots often carries some insurance and splits out with no community property. Community property states can be a problem.

I find the $2B estimate to build a tunnel under the Hudson to be just astounding. That's about $380K per foot. And it will probably (if the past is any guide) overrun that amount.

That's actually lower than most numbers I've tended to hear, though then again it's always a good question as to what's included as far as bells and whistles with a given project.

Yeah, I think that's off by about a factor of 10 - depending on how much else is included, most estimates I've seen have been in the $15-25 billion range.

Yeah, someone is smoking some potent stuff. But hey, when you know that you have no intention of meeting whatever you say, it removes a certain constraint of reality from the bull that one spews out. :)
