August MPR states loco 457 is not going to receive periodic maintenance at LAX but will be sent back to the bank. No date is given but it may be in our interests to report sightings of the fleet so we can see if and when retirements will happen.

Lets start

457 stated to go back to bank unknown when

The current situation with Cascades F59s is a little weird. 465 should be in Seattle now, having just completed a rebuild at Beech Grove including fresh paint. 466 hit a tree and was sent south to California. 467 is still out of service after the derailment in May. 468 and 469 are in service, 470 was, but was the lead unit in the vehicle strike with two fatalities today. No one seems to know what the plan is so far, but it seems odd that a locomotive with only a few months left in service would get fresh paint.

Do all of the Cascades locomotives belong to Amtrak?

Fresh coat of paint aside, I'm sure that Amtrak can continue to use these for a number of years. Even if they're only leasing them to California.

I believe California picked up their own Chargers. Most of the units have a 1998 date so that may influence the decision.

Many Amtrak engines pull state supported trains. If the states give Amtrak Chargers to use and it displaces P42s or F59s, they don't need backfill. However, the returned P42s as well as any F59PHI that are not being returned to a lessor and are in good shape can certainly help the pool. Even having extra units around so others don't have to be rushed back is a big plus. Lets say we wanted to start a total P42 renewal project. How many could I give up long term without jeopardizing service? 20 + extra running units is huge.....

That is the point exactly. States are running a good number of trains with Amtrak locos. They pay for using them. When they use their own, the ones Amtrak provided either go back in the pool, get returned to lessors if applicable, sold or retired. CalDot owns a bunch of their own also, the older ones will likely be disposed of, they are sensitive to replacement with lower emissions units in Cal.

Caltrans doesn't own all of the locomotives that are needed for state services. They can't even get enough cars in service. Both are being leased from Amtrak.

I don't think that the Chargers can come fast enough.

From my understanding of it, back ages ago when I looked it up, No. It's a mix bag. I think at one time, the Amtrak-owned ones just said "Amtrak" on the side & the WA-owned ones had the Cascades logo. IDK if that is still the case, or even if it was back then. Like I said it's been years since I looked that info up.

All of the Cascades F59PHis seem to be Amtrak owned. If they were state owned, they'd probably have state logos like the Talgo sets.

According to Wikipedia, all six of the F59PHis in Cascades service are leased from Amtrak. WSDOT is getting 8 Chargers to replace them.

All F59s in current Amtrak service belong to Amtrak, NCDOT, or Caltrans.
