Their employee pass privileges are quite different from airline employees, due to practices dating back to when the railroad and bus passes were ICC regulated, while airline passes were CAB regulated. Airline employee privileges extend to parents, and then also to other extended family and friends, on a more limited basis.
 
Amtrak employee passes are much more restricted than airline passes in terms of who can use them, but they’re much more usable than airline passes.

I’ve never been a pass rider on an airline, but my understanding is that these days they are, by and large, useless, unless you truly don’t care where you go or when you get there.

You are quite correct....try getting on a plane by just "flashing your pass" at a flight attendant.....believe you can still do that at least on unreserved trains.

On the other hand, some airlines will allow employee travel in the highest class available, at no charge. Yes, even intercontinental 'F' class.

And if you need to have positive space, you can book that and get 20 % off the fare...
