I've been told by a couple of private pilots in the past 40-50 years that following roads is sometimes the easiest way to navigate...if they already know, for example, that Interstate xx goes straight to whatever city.

In the early 1970s while in the USAF, one of my railfan friends was an air traffic controller at Wright Patterson AFB outside of Dayton OH, where we were both stationed. I joked one day that they probably told the inbound planes to follow I-70 to the 'white church' and turn left. He didn't deny it. I don't recall there being any white churches in the vicinity along I-70, either. Perhaps they used some other landmark to identify when to line up with the runway. He also relayed a story where TWA landed without notice at WPAFB as the Dayton airport (in Vandalia) is only 10 miles away and in all likelihood, the TWA pilot was asked by the DAY tower if they 'saw the runway', which they did.
Lots of Airline Pilots have landed @ the Wrong Airports, and even on Interstate Highways.

Reminds me of that scene in the film, "A Gathering of Eagles", where a bogus airliner makes an "emergency landing" at a Strategic Air Command base, the beginning of an "ORI", Operational Readiness Inspection"....
Great film, if you get to see it....

My dad,a Career Air Force Man, had an bit part in this Movie.

We used to watch it often, but when it' s shown on TV, the Scene hes in is usually edited out. Lol

WPAFB was a SAC base while I was there. I think they've vacated since, though.

While living in the barracks for my first 18 months or so there, although a sometimes heavy drinker myself, the 'SAC-rats' in the barracks, mostly mechanics, were true lushes! I wouldn't trust them to change a headlight in my car!

We had a “walk up call” of sorts this morning when we went to do our weekly grocery shopping: the credit card readers at the store we shop at were down and only CASH payments could be accepted. Fortunately, we had about $50 between us and were able to purchase the basics we needed to get us through the next few days. The store itself was almost empty of shoppers, so apparently most people had to go out and find some cash before they could shop. This is why we always carry some cash with us when we travel. Should the internet go down for an extended period, most credit cards would probably be useless and, if we were away from home, we’d be SOL.
