There used to be route guides with schedules on Amtraks website and whenever I took a trip I would check them out. I cant find them now. Anyone know why?

I believe he’s referring to Amtrak management, not you.

welcome to the forum! You’ll discover that though we love Amtrak, we also hate Amtrak. Haha
They are a Center of Excellence, though!

In some respects, "contempt" may be a more accurate description than "hate". At least as far as the C-suite goes.

Thank you all for the clarification. For a minute there I felt like my first day in Jr High School some 58 years ago where everyone knew I was the new kid. I love Amtrak also, love it so much I would rather go by train than fly. My wife and I always get a bedroom, she doesnt like having to put on makeup and fixing her hair before she has to use the bathroom. If the superliner roomettes had bathrooms like the viewliners we would be in those. But its all good. I feel like the traveling is part of the vacation. I havent found any reason to hate Amtrak yet, as I heard by one of the responders, but I do wish I could find a route guide with schedule for the California Zephyr, or as I have seen it called, teh CZ. See, Im learning the lingo. Take care all.

Welcome to the group and please feel free to ask any questions about rail travel and we will try to help (or sometimes confuse the issue more). Many of us like to travel by Amtrak but we sometimes feel that some decisions made by Amtrak management or employees are not in the best interests of passengers or passenger rail. The elimination of the route guides is one of those poor decisions.

Keith1951,
We feel the same way you do about traveling by train. As for route guides that describe what you’re seeing along the way, we understand that some of the older ones are posted on-line somewhere. When we travel on the Southwest Chief (SWC), we take with us the SWC route guide from 1998 that is two route guides in one: west to east and east to west. We also pack along an original copy of By the Way, the route guide that the Santa Fe Railroad once gave out to its passengers. This one is quite extensive and has information on almost every small town located along the main line between Los Angeles and Chicago. Although most of this information is hopelessly out of date, it does contain many interesting bits of what is now “route trivia” from yesteryear. As for printed timetables which show the arrival and departure times, we’re using a SWC schedule from 2018 which has the same arrival and departure times that are being used today.

I grabbed all the old Route Guides that I could find online at the "Travels with Kev" link below (and other google searches) and have posted them on my Amtrak archives website:

https://juckins.net/amtrak_routes/amtrak_route_guides.php
They are a fun reference to note things out the window while your traveling. It's too bad Amtrak pulled them off their website and abandoned yet another unique aspect of train travel.
