Who has actually traveled with kids being in a roomette/bedroom without an adult? Amtrak is confusing on this and when I searched here there were conflicting answers. Some say adults have to be in each room/bedroom you book and others say exceptions can be made. Can a 13 & 15 year old share a roomette if I book it next to/across from mine? I will be traveling with 3 kids and plan to have the youngest with me, and the older two share. They are responsible teenagers... usually ;-)

I don't know if the website would let you do it, the best bet would be to call and speak with an agent. I don't see any reason why this would not be allowed. I'm sure other members will have more info.

I am not sure they would let you book it that way but once you board, unless the kids cause a problem, I seriously doubt anyone is going to be concerned about who is sitting/sleeping in a particular room.

We've taken multiple daytime rooms with kids and grandkids and all moved back and forth between them.

How many adults are traveling? If it’s two adults two kids then book 1 adult in each room with one kid in each room. One adult and two kids that age should not be a problem on the train. The work around on the internet is to book the kids a on adult fare. Not sure how much more this costs but if it’s not too bad for you than you have a plan.

I just tried doing a booking for one adult and two youth on the website. You don't have to say who is in which room, at least as far as I got.

edit: But you will need to call to get rooms across the hall from each other.
She has 3 kids. One will be in her room

I travelled in a roomette next to two children who were maybe ~8 and 7 so much younger than your teenagers. No problem with the train staff, except they were quite loud early in the morning, putting their top bunk up and down. Probably just curious. It wouldn't be a bad idea to give the teens a quick peptalk about being respectful with noise.

Had problems with kids and parents on a train from CHI to St Louis in coach. They were very upset naturally from a 12-17 hour delay for freight traffic that they obviously had not planned on and didn't bring money for food and blankets or pillows for sleeping. BUT all the complaining and such wasn't helping. Many would have offered to help except they were so billigerant and demanding. You cant feed your kid soda and sugar and think they will not be running up and down the car with a sugar high. :O Anyway some of us were traveling all the way to TX and beyond and wanted to sleep. Thankfully had earphones and tuned it out. About 2am a train attendent came in and told them under no circumstances was it to continue and the kid had to stay in the seat and be quiet. Found out later people down below in the bottom level had complained of the noise of the little kid running up and down the aisle. You have to understand we were all not happy as we were on freight tracks due to track repair so there wasn't anything out the windows and no one likes being stopped in the middle of trees in the middle of nowhere to be seen... But there are those of us that wanted to sleep.... Finally early the next morning we got to St Louis and they all got off. There was clapping.... Some were very nice as one couple of ladies was deaf and I was writing back and forth to them what the annoucements were and what was going on. We made up some time to TX but were still 9-10 hours late. Felt bad for those connecting in to the Sunset Limited in San Antonio as I dont think it waited up and one lady was going to see her son graduate in Tuscon I think it was... Hope and pray it worked out for her.... Very thankful our friends picking us up in Houston after the bus from Longview came even though it was after 10pm instead of 1pm....

I have a fair amount of experience of travelling with kids (not with me, but kids on the train). I've luckily never experienced this, but I find it completely irresponsible for anyone to do it.

I did understand as the delay was 12-17 hours on what they had sold as a 4 hour direct train to St Louis on freight tracks. But Amtrak couldn't do anything and they did give them blankets and pillows and credit in the cafe car. They were just so loud and yelling and complaining about what there was nothing anyone could do anything about. Hard to travel with those type of people... Most times we had not had any problems with children as they have been well behaved. This time it was the parents with the children that were most unbehaved... ;)
