SMART is seeking federal funds to extend service into North Snonoma County and eastwards into Solano County

The extension, north of Santa Rosa to Windsor, was going to be completed by the end of last year, but it never happened. Hopefully, this year. I will look forward to the run up to Healdsburg, CA. A town with several good restaurants and a gateway to the Sonoma County wine country.

An eastern run, to Solano County and the Amrak Capitol Corridor station in Fairfield/Suisun, would really be nice. Then, a possible further connection with the Calif. Zephyr and Coast Starlight in Davis or Sacramento. Also, the San Joaquin trains at Sacramento.

This is not a criticism specifically of this article. Except for the few who know the area in question most articles leave a high % of readers lost. Maps would be a great help even for many natives not rail savvy.

Maybe this will be of some help:

The SMART train will eventually (who knows when at the current pace) terminate in Cloverdale, Calif. Cloverdale is the northernmost town in Sonoma County. The southernmost terminus of the SMART train is Larkspur, just north of the Golden Gate bridge. I couldn't find a map of the proposed route to Fairfield/Suisun, but the route will start at the Novato SMART station and head east, along hiighway 37, to Fairfield/Suisun.

I hope to ride this Train in August between Larkspur and Santa Rosa when I visit my Brother in Sonoma after flying from Austin -SFO on SWA RT for about $400.( Amtrak wants around 1,000-$1200 One Way for a Roomette on the Eaglette/Sunset.)

I hate when they don't use maps in articles like this.

I believe the planned line to Fairfield/Suisun is mostly the dotted line on the map. The existing railroad route. That map doesn't extend all the way to Fairfield/Suisun, but the existing railroad does. I'm not sure whether they're planning to build a cut-off; the existing line does an "up and back" to Schellville, then to Napa Junction. A 3 mile cutoff would cut the route by 3 miles and remove a hairpin turn at Schellville, but require a new bridge. A longer cutoff along route 37 would require bigger bridges and probably be both more expensive and have a lot more wetlands issues, so is unlikely.

It would also be possible to serve Vallejo, potentially.
