They are planning to build a hotel on the other side of the Amarillo Civic Center from the station. The lower level would be able to house restaurants and shops. Still would be a little bit of a walk though. http://amarillo.com/news/local-news/2015-02-25/downtown-hotel-design-plans-revealed
One should not assume that because we haven't had a train since Amtrak formed that we wouldn't use it. I know many people that would want to use Amtrak over any other form of transportation. Yes Amarillo has an airport but only bare minimal flights come through it and we all know Greyhound is...
There is one thing I would like to throw out on the table for discussion. Who says the Chief has to run 79MPH over the reroute section. It can just as easily run 70MPH and still make a better time than on the current route. By the Chief running 70 along with the freight trains there will be...
I really hope that Amtrak gets to use the Santa Fe Depot if they come through Amarillo, I live in Stinnett and I drive 3 hours to Garden City to catch the Chief but it would really be good to only go an hour and board in Amarillo.
It just depends on your taste. However we do have our own beauty with our sunsets, golden fields of grain and wind turbine farms. Also not the whole route is as flat as most people think as most of the route between Wichita and Amarillo goes through the Canadian River water breaks and looks much...
That is not necessarily true. Due to the elimination of the Wright Amendment there are less flights in and out of Rick Husband Intr. so flights are not required to stop in Amarillo and can have direct connections from big city to big city so this will more than likely be an instance where train...
They can use the station building and just put in a passenger siding and platform that conforms to the passenger requirements directly south of the station building.
While most of these stations are very possible I would eliminate Canyon as a stop as it is only 17 miles by road from Amarillo and shorter by rail. Actually if you drive between them you barely can see the transition between the towns. So its safe to say its a small metroplex.
Amarillo is buying the station with the foresight of amtrak moving the SWC. Plus it is also making it a main building in the downtown renovation project.
The old passenger siding was torn out but the space is still there and the owner of the station said he would let Amtrak use it if it where to reroute. However if this has changed they could still put another track in next to the existing main just next to the station and it would accommodate it...
While the Dodge City portion of the line is a factor for the SWC time the real problem is the section from Albuquerque, NM to La Junta, CO. BNSF is sill using the Dodge City line for agricultural trains but no traffic goes through Raton Pass. So its just probably line up keep for freight speeds.
That's not entirely accurate. While the Transcon does go through Wichita and Amarillo it doesn't go through Lubbock but heads southwest to Hereford and then Clovis with both being considered station stops.
It should except for a few trains coming in and out of the Red River sub,the line that goes to Lubbock and another line that pulles off of the transcon at Clovis.
