    Amtrak Dining

Well if we are going by ridership the Star and Meteor should have it back over any of the western trains.

    Amtrak Dining

How are you choosing which trains should get what service? Why would the lake shore get full dining and not the Capitol for example?

    Lockers in Chicago or Sacramento?

Yes, it’s called a luggage storage room. It’s for storing luggage.

    Lockers in Chicago or Sacramento?

Chicago has lockers. I don’t believe Sacramento does. The Amtrak counter at Sacramento may or may not store your bags for a fee. (Not sure what the official policy is, but it will change from day to day based on who is working anyways). If you’ll be traveling in a sleeping car in / out of...

So how does that 11 hr 58 minute layover in NOLA work?

Why not? If you are asking someone to make a list, shouldn’t that list include all hotels close to the station?

Watching the Weather from a train

I’ve been on the Starlight with snow through the Cascades, and the zephyr with snow through the Rockies. Both felt like being inside a snow globe! I’ve been on several trains with heavy rain, and lightning. Once on the city of New Orleans we had to stop for a tree that had fallen and we...

    Coach Cafe Pictures

Are those the old cars that used to be on the Texas Eagle back when it split? I remember those as a kid!

So how does that 11 hr 58 minute layover in NOLA work?

There are many hotels within walking distance to the Amtrak station. Just depends on your definition of walking distance. There’s a homewood suites and a Drury about a 1/2 mile walk. I loved staying there as it’s right on the St. Charles streetcar line.

    Amtrak Dining

Agreed. The Silver Trains, Lake Shore and Capitol especially and probably the Crescent as well since it’s the only connection between the NEC and Atlanta. I would give them a pass on the city of New Orleans and Texas Eagle, a proper CCC would be adequate for those trains. (As originally...

    Amtrak Dining

That’s not a reason for them not to. There isn’t a good reason not to have dining cars on all long distance trains.

They all had full traditional dining at one time.

    Union Station in Omaha

I’m not sure about a new railroad museum in Omaha. The Durham museum that is located in the former Union Station has several pieces of UP equipment, are you thinking of that? That is on the Union Pacific side, Amtrak uses the BNSF side. The old Burlington Station was vacant and unused for...

    Entertainment on the train

Amtrak had video equipment and content in coaches back in the early 90’s and also when the Talgos first appeared. And of course the viewliners as well. I remember the TVs lasting on the viewliners for several years, they weren’t instantly broken or stolen. With personal devices it’s not...

    Entertainment on the train

The only time I’ve seen every seat taken in SSL was on the Zephyr through the Rockies. And no offense but I’m not going to limit my time during the most scenic portion of a train ride I spent lots of money for. Right after breakfast I’ll grab my spot and I will be there until Lunch!
