Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H1

When I travel LD, I'd prefer to have some familiar Amtrak favorites and some refreshed and/or regional novelty. Next time I go I'll look for the TD steak and the French toast, both of which I enjoyed last time. But everything I had from the traditional dining menu was at least good and even...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

No, no one knows for sure. This whole 40+ page thread has more or less informed speculation as to what the future LD fleet might look like.

Welcome to AU, you will find much useful information here and much discussion of the feasibility and desirability of Amtrak's current plans for expansion across the country, including Ohio.

FRA Long Distance Service Study discussion

There's some amazing stuff in there - thorough and imaginative thinking as far as what could be done and what the benefits would be in terms of new populations served, time saved by new routings, connectivity, stations needed, and so on and so forth.

New Gulf Coast Amtrak service (New Orleans - Mobile and Baton Rouge)

Given the FRA LD proposals that just came out, that seems ill-advised and unlikely. but the article was presumably written before that announcement and the latest STB hearing and who is this guy anyways?

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

I love my superliners, but I don't know that it's a given that they are buying bi-levels to replace them. And I'm ok if they don't as long as whatever they buy is good and holds up well.

FRA Long Distance Service Study discussion

I think they meant #2, but there's lots of interesting routing there that I for one would never have thought of.

Why do long distance Amtrak trains travel at very low speeds?

For the reasons mentioned above and because they largely run on track owned by freight railroads who don't need to go that fast and therefore don't build and maintain their track to support faster speeds even where grades and curves (or the lack of) would allow it. Higher grade tracks are...

    Amtrak Cascades Service discussion

Do they actually sell many Portland to Oregon City fares? And if you're a senior it may not be cheaper. Basic TriMet senior fare is $1.25

    Sleeper accommodation discussion

If you are travelling alone, then a roomette is fine unless you really need the ensuite.

Can Private Railroads operate passenger service without government help?

The UP owns nowhere near most of the rail in the USA, and even if they did it wouldn't mean that they would necessarily make a profit on passenger service. The UP has other things to worry about, it owns little to no rolling stock for passenger service and hasn't run any for decades, why would...

    Riding Amtrak for fun?

There's definitely some overlap, last year our local chapter of the Studebaker Drivers Club went on a local excursion train ride and that event was quite well attended.

    Riding Amtrak for fun?

In 2022 I went from Portland, OR to Orlando FL and back, mostly in sleepers and mostly by myself, stopping in Chicago, South Bend (for a Studebaker event), NYC, DC, my wife joined me for some of it and we had the best time, both on the train and at our various destinations. I'd do it again and...

How does VIA deal with extreme cold?

My memory of having ridden that route home to Saskatoon when it was still rum by the CNR is that they just went ahead and ran it as best they could - often painfully late since nothing runs right in those conditions, and it was kind of cold in the coaches and really cold between cars. I suspect...
