    Parking at Albany-Rensselaer?

    I talked to one of the managers in the parking department today. They do have spaces where I could park the bus, but they can't guarantee they will be available. He told me to call them Saturday morning and if the spots are open they'd save one for me. Given the local alternatives (basically...

    Parking at Albany-Rensselaer?

    Thanks, I will call and see what they say. I've also started searching for alternate locations through friends.

    Parking at Albany-Rensselaer?

    I've parked at the Albany station in past, but only with my car. This time I am going to bring my skoolie (full sized school bus) and leave it there for 4 days. I don't think the height will be any issue and it sounds like parking in the lot to the right (furthest from the station) is the key...

    NYP-->ALB (part 4 of 4)

    There is a cafe at the ALB station, but it was closed when I arrived last night. I will check it out the next time I'm there.

    NYP-->ALB (part 4 of 4)

    I could have double checked the services on that route beforehand, I guess. At least it wasn't a long trip.

    NYP-->ALB (part 4 of 4)

    I walked down to Track 5 to board the 5:15pm train to Albany with a sandwich and orange from the Metro Lounge, planning to pick up a drink and maybe some snacks in the cafe car. Down on the platform I was directed to the very end of the train for the Business Class car. Unlike the tickets...

    CVS-->WIL-->NYP (part 3)

    Saturday March 4, 2023 - 4pm-ish I'm overlooking the Moynihan Train Hall on the balcony of the Metro Lounge at NYP as I type this. I just arrived from WIL on Acela 2254 in first class. That is where they have been hiding all the 'train food'. But let's go back one day first. Yesterday I...

    CHI --> CVS (part 2)

    Thanks, a bit lighter fare next time would be a better choice.

    CHI --> CVS (part 2)

    Saturday, Feb 25, 2023 During my layover in Chicago I walked up Canal then took a right on Madison and headed for Reckless Records. I spent about 30 minutes and 4 times that in dollars buying a bunch of albums. I was hoping they could ship them, but they said they hadn't really started up...

    ALB -> CHI (part 1)

    Heading out on the Cardinal to CVS in a few hours, I'll report back on that one tomorrow. BTW, while waiting in the lounge there was a wedding party out on the sidewalk taking lots of pictures. A little chilly (mid 30's) but they didn't seem to mind.

    ALB -> CHI (part 1)

    Feb 23, 2023, Train #49 (LSL), car 4911, roomette 5. I arrived at the Albany/Rensselaer station around 5:20pm, picked a seat in the waiting room and double checked all the frequencies for the trip to Chicago on my scanner. At 6:20p the station attendant asked if I was in a sleeper headed to...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

    I'm on train #49 now, running about 50 down, at the Syracuse station. I had dinner (flex food) but in the dining car. From all the posts it sounded like I would have to eat in my room or the cafe car. Nice atmosphere and the short ribs were pretty good.

    Cardinal from CHI to CVS

    Thanks for the report. I will be doing that same trip (CHI-CVS) this coming weekend, but with a roomette. Nice to know we have the option of eating in the cafe car instead of the room.

    Not new, but returning member (NH)

    It's been a few years since I've been here, but I'm hitting the rails again soon so may as well pop in here. I've done a lot of east coast and mid-west train travel and a clockwise trip around the country when the kids were smaller. A lot of my recent travel has been in my skoolie, but train...

    What's the longest vacation you've taken by train?

    My 'boring' comment was not about the scenery, just the lack of incidents compared to the previous legs of the trip. Glacier National Park was great. We've done CHI-CVS too, the big gorge is cool.
