    Motivation for traveling by train?

I'd say that for long-haul trips they are correct. Also, it costs as much as a business-class air ticket, if you get a roomette. For shorter trips, or just about anywhere in the Acela Corridor, the math is more in the train's favor. Last time I took a long-haul train trip was from Hattiesburg...

Amtrak goes straight to STB to restore Gulf Coast service.

Not too familiar with that but for instance, all CSX's Gulf Coast traffic rolls right past the depot in Gulfport. Mississippi and the local community are all for passenger service restoration. If Amtrak asked nicely the city would probably set up some sort of train-cam, car counter or whatever...

Amtrak goes straight to STB to restore Gulf Coast service.

Does anyone else believe that perhaps Amtrak could get the information they need from state traffic cameras or other available sensors?

Impact of a Russian cyberattack on Amtrak

In a computer management course I once took, we discussed fall-backs to manual methods and how they worked in the '60s & '70s, vice the then-current situation ( in the '90s). I'm sure that today no one even knows what a manual fall-back is, much less how to use one.

    NS Aberdeen Derailment 3/5/2022

I decided to check in after seeing a photo on Facebook showing 20 hopper cars accordioned back and forth across all three tracks. It's a mess. Most of the cars are upright and still holding their cargo. I suppose that's a good thing. I'm not sure.

Amtrak goes straight to STB to restore Gulf Coast service.

That and geography. Mobile Bay is a big indentation in the coastline and a major seaport. Bridges needed to be placed above the head of navigation for oceangoing ships. The highways take shortcuts via tunnels that are not available to trains. However, there should have been a rail shortcut from...

    Trouble phoning Amtrak from UK

At one time, long, long ago, all US toll-free lines had a regular toll counterpart with a different area code. So, +1.800.123.4567 could be called by calling +1.200.123.4567 (where I just used 200 as an example) This was specifically so that toll-free lines could be called from abroad. I can't...

Possible trip to New Orleans in July

The RTA website has a lot of contradictory information. Some maps show a #46 bus that would go directly from NOL to the Marriott but it's not on the current schedule. I know I've taken a streetcar from NOL to the Aquarium but that was years ago. I think that the combination of COVID and the...

Maybe no cellphone coverage is not always a negative for Amtrak?

When backpacking it's enough for me to be able to send and receive text messages. A train is a little city on wheels. One expects city conveniences, like toilets and cellular service. What countries, besides Australia allow major passenger rail routes to be unserved by cellular?

    Train Legs vs. Sea Legs.

I'd be more concerned about being tossed about, particularly when moving between cars. Those freight-grade tracks are none too smooth.

Who is drawn to slow train travel?

People on vacation who just want to see the country. In Spain we rode the narrow gauge line that runs across the northern coast from Ferrol to Gjion. I've ridden the train from Narvik to Stockholm and continued on to Oslo. Have good memories of both trips. All I recall of taking the Shinkansen...

Taking a trip on the Crescent - Now, you tell me!

I don't know for sure but it sounds like something that would happen in NOLA. Last time I was in Preservation Hall (many years ago), there was a big rotten hole in the floor in the back of the main room. It was just that decrepit. Music was good but I could have sworn there were rats watching...

Taking a trip on the Crescent - Now, you tell me!

You can take the street car from Union Station to within a couple of blocks of the hotel. Not exactly the "heart" of the Quarter but you don't really want that. A quite corner is better. Some good restaurants nearby. As for the Crescent. just MHO but enjoy some long naps. It's a snoozer. A lot...

CSX, NS say Gulf Coast passenger service would ‘devastate’ freight operations

I think a lot of it would be elevated bridges to avoid bridge delays.
