Something in the business world known as lost leaders, ie, you lose money on item A, but by getting the customer into the store, you do sell them B and C... the repuggie complaint about losing money on the dinning cars is a red herring - just an excuse to eliminate Amtrak and force more people...
Maybe what I did on the last CZ trip might become a norm, especially in a world of cell phones: but at Grand Junction, the day before, arranged with restaurants for meals (lunches), and a food delivery service... and had Mexican waiting for me on the platform going one way; and Chinese going...
Two thoughts come to mind:
1) How much of this shortfall has to do with Congress continuing to squeeze Amtrak, ie, if one looks at generated revenue - has that changed significantly, in percentage terms?

Basically I have to agree with the comments... but do have to wonder if maybe the demographics haven't change since then, ie, a very large retiring boomer generation (that was more of the jet-setter generation then)... wonder if they might not be more inclined toward a train vs today's flying...
Would be nice if there was a clickable: "Forward To Amtrak Management"... and to generally think, we here are the defenders of Amtrak... imagine what the rest must be saying?
Climbing up on his soapbox:
But what ever happened to personal responsibility? Why does there even HAVE to be laws and regulations?
