Am I missing anything by leaving from Sacramento instead of Emeryville on CZ?

I assume you are taking the CZ eastbound rather than north/south. It leaves SAC at 11:00am. Sounds like a good change of plans to me. Modify online. You won't get cash back but you will get a voucher for the difference. You have a year to use that voucher on another adventure.

Texas Eagle/Sunset Limited El Paso Burrito Lady

Her burritos are very popular. A few of the conductors even announce, and hype, an hour or so ahead that she will be on the platform. Plus, Hess never did anything fast!!

Texas Eagle/Sunset Limited El Paso Burrito Lady

A flash from the past. Joe Hess buying all of the burritos he could carry from the Burrito Lady. The Two Joes bought these on every occasion but this was the last time...we both got food poisoning for a couple of days.

Chicago Union Station ~ Is Boston Blackies still a place to go?

I still go to Boston Blackies occasionally for a burger. I prefer Dylan's (one block to the west on Clinton Ave). A great deal more variety on the lunch menu. Enjoy !!

In Memory of Eric Minton - "GG-1"

I have wonderful memories of Eric. We first met 8 or 9 years ago at the LA Union Station Amtrak birthday celebration. He had his granddaughter with him and we had a great day enjoying all of the activities. I was flying to Las Vegas the next day but Eric would have nothing of it...he invited...

Odd little detour, 21 (May 30)

Got on the train too late in STL for dinner and on my last TE trip the breakfast was horrible so I just had OJ and coffee in my seat. Coming back, I was leaving Dallas which, like Chicago, is a great food city. So, I ate a fantastic late lunch before boarding and passed on the diner northbound...

Odd little detour, 21 (May 30)

Too late out of STL to see the Illinois reroute southbound. But, a week later I got the full effect on the northbound ride. And the ride was super smooth !! I live in southern Illinois so it was fun to see my 'stomping ground' from a completely different perspective.

Odd little detour, 21 (May 30)

I'm taking the 21 out of STL tonight. Hope we depart close to on-time so there will be enough daylight to check out the Illinois track. On the bright side, it CAN'T be any rougher than the UP track north of PBF. On the down side, we are crossing the old (very old) Eads bridge !!

    Hoosier state business classes

Amber said the 2 Joes couldn't have breakfast on the Hoosier State this morning. Our buddy, Steve, ate three breakfasts on the Sunday train so there was nothing left for us!!! Seriously, this is a great 5 hour trip in a very comfortable dome car, cordial staff and wonderful food and service.

    45 day trip advice

In the top, right corner of this page, search 2 Joes Gastronomic Adventures. We are two old guys who don't like to ride cabs or walk. We have gone to many of the towns along your planned routes. I think you will get a lot of hints on how to get around on public transportation (and, possibly...

Pere Marquette boarding difficulty in Chicago

I ride several of the corridor trains out of CUS quite often. Your problem is not unique to the #370 train but occurs more often than it should on many of the 'three digit' trains. The staff that works in the Metropolitan Lounge are experienced, friendly, and competent BUT the loading of the...

Parking at Centralia and Effingham, IL

Free parking at both. More paved area at Centralia. If you arrive at Effingham during a heavy travel time, you'll be parking on the dirt/grass...but there is plenty of it!!! Another consideration: Both are flag stops for the CONO, so buy your ticket a few days in advance to insure the...

    Elko, NV

A few years ago my fuel pump went out when I was at the top of the ridge line looking down at Elko in the valley. I coasted down the hill and rolled my car to a repair shop a couple of blocks off of the main street thru town. To kill some time while the car was being repaired, my wife and I...

    Car rental at/near STL station

Walk across the street from the Amtrak station to the Sheraton. There is a Budget rental right there.
