Why no elevated platform in Flagstaff?

I’ve always had someone to help on or off! An attendant or Conductor has always been there when boarding or disembarking!

    Sunset Limited/Texas Eagle discussion

I’d give you a like for your observation except someone might construe it to mean I don’t want the SSL to return to Florida. The 12th of Never is just about right!

    VIA Canadian and the Canadians

The big problem on the Canadian is bothe the long stretches of single rail track and the length of the freight trains- they are too long to fit in a siding to allow allow the Canadian to pass.

    Sleeper accommodation discussion

This summer in a bedroom on the SSL, the partition between the rooms was so loose I was able to stuff a paperback book into the gap and silence the unbearable noise. The doorstop I always carry to stop rattles wasn’t big enough!

    VIA Canadian and the Canadians

Great trip! We thought we would read a lot in the prairie but didn’t. Started “collecting” the old grain elevators like the Canadians do. Expect delays as long freights get priority but it just extends your trip if you have no deadlines! We enjoyed the food, the Canadians wines and meeting...

Amtrak Dining and Cafe service 2023 H2

I totally agree that sharing the dining experience with others is one of the pleasures of train travel. Eating in the room or roomette is not a great experience for me but an option for those who do not wish company. My first long trip was on the Canadian where we met people from all over the...

    Future direct Chicago-Florida Route

A Chicago to Miami route would be awesome. It would need to go through Atlanta which is very much needed!

    VIA Canadian and the Canadians

The Canadian is the best train ride We’ve ever been on. I’ll grant you that iit’s a “land cruise” and that we sat on sidings watching freights go by but in their defense, there are long stretches of single track which are a vital link of Canadian commerce and logistics. If you can find the...

First time on long distance Amtrak roomette

My wife and I have dufflebags that fit in the area above the hallway in the viewliners. That along with a backpack is perfect for travel. On the Superliners which don’t have that space, we use the solace downstairs.

Eric and Pat's 2023 San Diego-Toledo-San Diego Trip Report

Thanks for the great, very detailed report. Really enjoyed it since we came back to Greenville SC, starting in Flagstaff via the Chief, Capital Limited and the Crescent. Fortunately for us we made all the connections!

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Just back from a long trip , 5 trains! The lemon cake good. Flat iron steak remarkably good and cooked to order, lunch salad very good, shrimp appetizer overcooked and caprese skewers good.

    Crescent discussion

I’m not sure about Uber or Lyft but would expect it not to be a problem. The Clemson Station is right on the main road (route 123) and very walkable to anywhere on Campus or in town.

    Crescent and CONO, March 2023

Enjoyed your report, however it did nothing to allay my lack of enthusiasm for the Crescent. Since we live in the Greenville SC area it is our only Amtrak service and our experiences have been uniformly bad however we have never been more than 4 hours late (and never less than 2 hours late”. In...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

I guess I’ll give this another shot - until Amtrak correctly accounts for costs and revenue, there will be no correct analysis of the food service. In simple terms, the costs include the cost of the food, the salaries of the food service employees and the fixed costs of the cafe and dining...

    Hotels convenient to Amtrak

How about a hotel near the Flagstaff Station. We are catching the Southwest Chief out of Flagstaff at 4:20 am this summer and need a hotel close by. Any suggestions?
