    Potential Detours

That’s an interesting conclusion! If I am thinking right it is possible with the current 3 days a week schedule to use only two trainconsists. for by example the Empire Builder.

    Potential Detours

I have been looking around on the internet, and I think it most likely must have been this route. I noticed that in normal circumstances the Empire Builder uses tracks of BNSF. Spokane International is UP. Here in Europe the railroadnetwork in one country is one organization. I can imagine it is...

    Potential Detours

Thank you for your information! I dont remember that passengers for (by example West-Glacier or Whitefish) had to be “bussed”. Probably I slept through those stations if. If I am looking on openrailwaymap.org I see there is a parallel track from Sandpoint to Spokane. Is that a possiblility in...

    Potential Detours

I have a question about a detour in the night from Tuesday February 27 2001 to Wednesday 28 February 2001 on the Empire Builder somewhere between Havre and Spokane. I made a trip from Chicago to Portland. Because of a freight derailment there where rumors in the train of changing on a bus. Later...

Not happy with servicelevel on Amtrak as European

We finished a transcontinental Amtrak-trip a few days ago from NY (train 49 LSL and 5 CZ) and compare it with a number of trips nearly 20 years ago. Normally we feel the US as a very service-orientated country. Despite the fact that we enjoyed the trip ( in a Roomette) scenerywise we found the...

Checking in luggage for only part of the trip

We finished the transcontinental trip by checking in one big suitcase, the other a little smaller one fitted in the cubichole over the hallway in the viewliner and of course downstairs in the luggagerack of the superliner.

Checking in luggage for only part of the trip

We will travel from New York (Lakeshore Limited) via Chicago (4 hours changing time to Zephyr) to Emeryville. Is it possible and adviseble to check in luggage only for NY to CHI because of spaceproblem with big suitcases in viewliner and yet have entrance to suitcases during long trip on Zephyr...

Lakeshore Limited connection to California Zephyr today (2/15)

Bob and Shanghai, thank you for Youri answers! We are from Europe and pay it with money and not with points OR something like that. We have booked it months before and will travel mid-March.

Lakeshore Limited connection to California Zephyr today (2/15)

We are going to make this trip as holiday-experience, not als transport only. Shanghai, are you on a sleeper? I am not to worried to much, but is it also possible that if you have to take the train next day and the sleepers on the CZ are sold out and by example not sold out on the Southwest...

Lakeshore Limited connection to California Zephyr today (2/15)

We are going to use this same day (guaranteed) connection next month. Only a question: will they put (sleepingcar)passengers on a bus by example between South-Bend and Naperville sometimes? Today that seems a possibility I think.

    Lakeshore limited:limited diningcar menu??

We (from Europe) are looking forward to our transcontinental traintrip and discovered a very "limited" diningcar menu on the Amtrak website! I remember some time ago (two months?) a menu comparible with the western trains. Has it changed shortly or is my memory misleading me? We travel in a...

Placement of Sleepers on the California Zephyr

I am also curious about this question (see my topic earlier). Perhaps mr. "Agent" of the video's as member of this forum I think and regular observer of the Zephyr can inform us about changing rear-front-rear. etc. Someone of this forum did say 15 Februar is an important date. (Excuse...

    Train 49 NYP-CHI Viewliner Orientation

Hallo, What a interesting forumcommunity this is!! (Sorry for mistakes in my English) In relation to my last question: If our room would not be on the Hudson-side, would it not be rude to ask the sleepingcar-attendent if there is still a an empty roomette at the Hudson-side to sit there for...
