Additional Service from New York/Philadelphia to Pennsylvania

at about $1.5m per mile, they could make a good chunk (133 miles) of the PGH-HAR route an extended siding.

Additional Service from New York/Philadelphia to Pennsylvania

I've ridden the PGH-NYP and back many times and I never felt the line was in poor shape. I'm not sure where $200m would go unless they're looking to straighten the line.

Additional Service from New York/Philadelphia to Pennsylvania

Apparently agreement was reached today. PennDOT, Norfolk Southern reach agreement to expand Western Pennsylvania passenger-rail access Eastbound service would depart Pittsburgh at 7 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. and westbound service would depart Harrisburg at 9:41 a.m. and 4:40 p.m.

I think they make mini-coolers that are plug in, so no need for ice if you could get one of those.

    Amtrak Derailment Philadelphia (5/12/2015)

Just like we pay people to fly or pay people to drive?

    Amtrak Derailment Philadelphia (5/12/2015)

So here's another question: Is 70mph - 106mph in 49 seconds just about max acceleration in an ACS-64 with a loaded train?

In response to 'why can't passengers know the speed?'

I think the point is that being off one or two mph in either direction isn't a big deal.

    Amtrak Derailment Philadelphia (5/12/2015)

From the situational awareness angle, wouldn't a simple GPS map display of the planned route be sufficient?

In response to 'why can't passengers know the speed?'

The app I use has a HUD mod where everything is displayed in mirror image. It is meant to put on your dashboard of your car and then it reflects on your windshield. I've used it a few times because it also displays navigation data.... but lining it up with my car's speedometer, it seems to be...

NEC City Pairs, Which are the Busiest??

Why wouldn't Amtrak want the money from the PHL-NYP run?

Related to: Why Americans don't ride trains

The reason I don't take Amtrak as much as I'd like is solely scheduling and service density. Adding an additional Pennsylvanian and Capitol Ltd. would make Amtrak more usable for me, though I know that really isn't possible. I'll probably log 75k air miles this year with most of that being...

New seats let airlines squeeze in more passengers

good lord... I am 5'10" with a slim build and I log a lot of air miles... I already find the seats too small and I'm not a big guy.

    Amtrakstitution

two years ago I was on 42 from Pittsburgh with a final destination of New Haven. I switched to a regional in Philly rather than switching at NYP. We pulled out of 30th Street and stayed slow for a while. Eventually we stopped and the conductor said there was a problem with the train in front of...

American Airlines / US Airways merger

North East Shuttle service. Basically owning PHL. Much better connections in Europe. In one of the press releases about the merger, they stated that there are only 12 routes that directly overlap. If that is to be believed, then their route map would end up being extremely complimentary to...

    Pennsylvanian may end

I'm aware. A second run for this line is important. I actually use it only end to end. Having a night time run would mean that I would be able to use it more successfully for business trips. As it is today, I cannot use it for the return from NYC because the return is too early in the day...
