Man blowing whistle as inbound train approaches

This is still done in Poland, immediately prior to departure. You can see and hear this procedure here:

Viewliner II Part 4: Sleeping Car production, delivery, deployment

Hopefully Amtrak's mechanical team can make some improvements over time. It's a shame as these are great cars otherwise.

Viewliner II Part 4: Sleeping Car production, delivery, deployment

I recently took an overnight trip in a roomette on the Crescent and was pleasantly surprised to find myself in a Viewliner II sleeping car. I didn't even realize that the IIs ran on this route yet and the SCA (who was great) mentioned that he rarely sees them and referred to them as "Florida...

Purpose of Talgo Employee on Amtrak Cascades

Thanks for the replies, that clears things up. The cost for such dedicated extra employee must be significant. I assume that an Acela consist is just as complex as a Talgo set and yet a dedicated "Acela tech" is not necessary.

Purpose of Talgo Employee on Amtrak Cascades

I was recently in the Pacific Northwest and I took a few rides on the Amtrak Cascades trains. In additional to the usual train crew I would expect, each train also had an employee in a Talgo uniform. At first, I thought it may have just been for a maintenance reasons on the particular trip I was...

    Amfleet I Interior Refresh

I found it! The only picture evidence of the center armrest. It definitely does not look like the type that folds up. It was in a USA Today article "Amtrak interiors throughout the years".

    Amfleet I Interior Refresh

I stand corrected, it's been a while since I've been in one. It might be the the outer armrests that fold up that I was thinking of.

    Amfleet I Interior Refresh

The simple solution to that would have been to install armrests that can fold up.

    Amfleet I Interior Refresh

It is indeed amazing that the chair structure itself is up to 42 years old and in as good of a condition as it's in. I really do not understand why Amtrak would have removed the center armrests. Every time I travel with someone that hasn't been on Amtrak, they comment on the lack of them...

    Amfleet I Interior Refresh

Does anyone know how many iterations of decor/seating the Amfleets went through over the years? I have included pictures of the few that I've either ridden in personally or seen in brochures. I think it would be really interesting to see a history of all the interiors these cares have been...

The Amtrak Website Has a "New Look."

I made several reservations on the new website two days ago and immediately received email confirmations for all of them. All my reservations show up correctly under "My Trips" on the website as well as under "Upcoming Trips" on the app, so it looks like they were at least able to resolve some...

Sebring, FL (SBG) to be Unstaffed Effective June 1, 2017

That happened to me once as well. I was returning home to Newark with three other people from Florida (don't remember if it was the Star or the Meteor). The bags for 2 out of 4 of us made it to Newark, the rest never got unloaded and ended up in New York. They were properly tagged so I guess the...

    Hotel recommendations in St. Albans

I stayed at the same Econo Lodge on South Main Street about a year ago and have the same review as jis. The place was very basic but my room was clean, the lady at the front desk was super friendly, and it came with a free (though very limited) breakfast the next morning. I actually walked to...

    Strange baggage handling

It's not anywhere as crazy as some of these other stories, but several years ago, four of us were coming back from West Palm Beach, FL to Newark, NJ. I believe this was on the Silver Star. Upon arriving in Newark and going to baggage claim, it turned out they forgot to offload some of our bags...
