Is there such a link/discussion for a passenger who would like to take the auto train without a car but share in the cost with someone and the additional passenger would pay for their own accommodation?
And, really, why doesn't Amtrak allow passengers without cars?
We're staying near the Portland OR Union Station and from reviews, it seems the surrounding area is inhabited with homeless camps. Is the area safe to walk?
I have gone to the diner and signed the receipt using the wrong car number and roomette number by mistake and when I got back to my roomette, I realized my mistake but the dining crew didn't notice.

That's great "TheCrescent",... how much did you save and I understand they are going to roll it out in the near future to more classes of service, hopefully, to include sleeper upgrades.
Let's just eliminate the dining perk for sleepers and price accordingly.
That would eliminate the need for a dining car and all passengers would use the lounge/cafe.
Of course, that would stick Amtrak with multi-million dollars of dining car stock and maybe that would shock our do nothing...
What is the best and cheapest cost per mile in a sleeper of any long distance train?
I'm coming up with the Texas Eagle or the Empire Builder but I'm really not adept at figuring out mathematically the rate.
And I'm discounting the coronavirus threat.
