What if the Milwaukee Road didn't de-energize the Pacific Extension

Absolutely. There were places infrastructure was overbuilt, but many places where it was overbuilt for the population at the time. If we clearly need something in 20 years, but it can’t turn a profit now, a subsidy to keep it going during the interim makes sense. The infrastructure will usually...

    Amtrak Detroiter

    It’s a calculated risk, ha ha 😉

    Stephen Gardner new Amtrak president

The Sunset Limited/Texas Eagle actually has the most potential of any route. It serves more population than the NEC, and serves the fastest growing part of the country. The daily Sunset through Phoenix should be one of the top priorities.

    Stephen Gardner new Amtrak president

There are no expendable long distance routes. The system is too skeletal as it is. Even one route cut will break it. Actually, the past cuts hurt the network so much and probably hurt Amtrak’s bottom line as well as losing political support. No cuts. Period.

    Amtrak Detroiter

Arriving in Detroit at 3:00 am isn’t feasible. The Wolverine has an ungodly late arrival too, and it’s not fun getting into Detroit at odd hours.

    Could Amtrak acquire trackage anywhere?

The Wellton Cutoff/West Line out of Phoenix would make a lot of sense for an Amtrak acquisition. It’s currently out of service, but could be rebuilt to 110 right away, and could even be high speed someday. LA-Phoenix-Tucson is a corridor with a lot of potential.

Auto Train Why not more routes?

Why wouldn’t most people just rent a car at their destination? I’m not seeing the market for this.

Auto Train Why not more routes?

That’s a really good point. The Auto Train works because you have a huge number of people concentrated in one place who want to go to another highly concentrated place, and not for a short period of time but to second homes. Also, rental cars are absurdly expensive in Florida so a multiple week...

Auto Train Why not more routes?

After driving for 16 hours. There’s nothing else you can do.

Auto Train Why not more routes?

You’re right. If your taking the train or plane, you’re much more likely to rent a car at your destination. If you really want your own car, you’re going to drive. The Auto Train is a niche of a niche market.

Auto Train Why not more routes?

I think the Auto Train really only fits the niche it’s in, Chicago to Florida, or Chicago to Arizona. First of all, who is really itching to take their own car on vacation? Most people rent cars at their destination. The lack being able to bring your own car doesn’t hurt the airlines. I can’t...

What if the Milwaukee Road didn't de-energize the Pacific Extension

This is the unfortunate and ridiculous impacts of bad decisions based solely on profit. If some combination could have kept the Milwaukee in business, it would have saves tons of jobs and the economic vitality of an entire region. I live in Southeast Arizona. This area has never recovered from...

What if the Milwaukee Road didn't de-energize the Pacific Extension

Since we’re in fantasy scenarios, which are lots of fun, how about the ICC really preserving competition and having the GN merge with the Milwaukee and NP merge with the CB&Q. Then Rock Island and North Western find a home within those. To preserve competition, North Western goes to NP/CB&Q and...

What if the Milwaukee Road didn't de-energize the Pacific Extension

The Staggers Act was not a success. Currently, the railways’ share of the freight business in the US is roughly the same as the share of freight transported by water. In percentages, about 17%. Post deregulation, the railroads decided they wanted to focus on hauling commodities, and little that...

2020 Voting Has Begun! Registration Deadlines Begin Oct. 4 (Pro-Rail and Non-Partisan)

Biden unseated an incumbent president by the highest percentage since FDR beat Hoover. Having worked in elections for many years, fraud is impossible on a large scale. Elections have to be certified by a bipartisan board of canvassers. Elections are observed by members of both parties. Machines...
