    College Station TX

Yes, that's the train. I was on it the spring of 1994. Bluebonnets everywhere!

    College Station TX

You know, there used to be a daytime coach class only train that ran between Houston and Dallas. I took it once out of Houston on my way to Chicago and back. This train would meet up with the Texas Eagle at early afternoon northbound, turn around and head southbound in the early evening after...

    College Station TX

I used to live near Taylor, and have traveled Amtrak out of the Taylor stop. Taylor is pretty small, and there is not much there. The "station" is a covered open pavilion with a couple of picnic tables along side the Union Pacific building. If you use google maps and plug in the address: 199...

    Amtrak booking website/issues/timetables removed

I have some copies of past schedules for some western trains, and a couple of eastern ones. Some are dated March, 2020, before the switch to three day a week train schedules. They are in pdf format. I can post them if: 1. there is interest 2. it is allowed and does not infringe on copyright...

    Amtrak Cascades Delays

I'm here in the Tacoma/Seattle area and I receive text alerts from Sound Transit regarding the Sounder commuter trains. I used to ride the Sounder 5 days a week commuting to my job, until I lost it because of the pandemic. I'm getting several alerts every day for the past week and a half, both...

    Amtrak Dining

I never got to try the mussels, so I hope they come back some day. In the meantime, here's a guy that shows you how to prepare them:

    First ever Amtrak Experience

My first Amtrak trip was in the summer of 1987. I lived in Houston TX at the time, and my new employer wanted me to take a week-long class in Chicago. I really hated flying, so I asked if I could take the train instead, as long as I traveled on my own time (weekends and vacation). They said...

Business Class on the Coast Starlight

Thanks everyone for the info. Looks like I have a pretty good chance to get 2 BC seats to myself if my bid is accepted, but no other perks beside that and a quieter car for my overnight trip. That will be enough for the $ I offered.

Business Class on the Coast Starlight

I am booked on the Coast Starlight from Los Angeles to Tacoma in mid-June. I have put in a bid to upgrade to Business Class from my purchased Coach seat. If I do receive the upgrade, what perks go with Business Class travel, and how crowded would the car be? When I booked the travel, the...

Dinner eastbound on the Empire Builder out of PDX

Thanks, everyone for your comments! I'm really looking forward to this trip! It's been a very hectic summer and fall, and I need to lose the phone, the car and the stinkin' TV for a couple of days. Alas, I won't be staying long, as I cannot take more time off work right now, and I will not...

Dinner eastbound on the Empire Builder out of PDX

Thanks, oregon pioneer! Those look like excellent choices. Also, I looked a few blocks south and found this: https://www.ascendantbeer.com/lunch-dinner/ That hummus plate looks delicious!

Dinner eastbound on the Empire Builder out of PDX

OK, thanks, Rasputin. I may just get some take-out at PDX before departure.

Dinner eastbound on the Empire Builder out of PDX

Thanks for your help, Yarrow and AmtrakBlue. I'm particularly interested in the menu choices. I cannot find it anywhere on Amtrak's website. I prefer to eat mostly vegetarian, with seafood occasionally. No beef, pork, or chicken for me, thanks. Would I have to request a special meal?

Dinner eastbound on the Empire Builder out of PDX

I have a train trip coming up next week, and part of it is on the EB eastbound out of Portland. What will be my dinner choices? I will be traveling in a Roomette to the Izaak Walton Inn in Essex, MT, and this is my first time traveling this EB segment. I know the dining car travels eastbound...

    Amtrak Coach Safety Concern

You're right about it being highly unusual. In all my Amtrak travels over the last 30 years, this was the only time I've had anything go missing. And it's the first time I've heard of something being stolen. I've always felt safe traveling in coach and will travel in coach again in the future.
