Right now, July 2020, may be the ‘sweet spot’ for booking Amtrak travels.

"...your reservations can be cancelled and refunded without penalty until September 30..." So Amtrak has extended it with one month now? I'll check their website.

    Amtrak Hubs

I agree, that's also what I'm thinking of when I hear the word 'hub'. New Orleans maybe as well, e.g. when you're doing a coast-to-coast train trip (Sunset Limited and Crescent).

Chicago Union Station Metropolitan Lounge During Pandemic

Same for me. I had the whole upstairs part for myself.

Way to cut down losses on long distance trains

Exactly what I was thinking too. I remember seeing the Casa del Desierto in Barstow, CA.

Sunset Limited - New Orleans to El Paso 6/3-6/4

I was on the Sunset Limited (from Los Angeles) in May 2012 and it was only 55 minutes late into New Orleans. Not bad. I loved your trip report and the photos. Brings back some nice memories.

OK to go inside Washington Union Station during long-distance train stop

I agree with railiner. I wouldn't do it, I think there's not enough time. Are the Flexible Dining Breakfasts really that bad? I have not tried them yet.

Is the Montrealer coming back or just the Vermonter?

I'm sorry to hear that, that you can't visit now due to Covid-19. We're all hoping for 2021!

Is the Montrealer coming back or just the Vermonter?

Did you really do that? 200 times! If you don't mind asking me, but was that for work i.e. business trips, or vacation?

    Amtrak's Smallest Most Powerful Train

That's indeed a tiny train. I loved the ride on the Heartland Flyer, back in 2015.

    Positive Train Control (PTC) installed?

Quote from Jim Loomis: All Aboard - The Complete North American Train Travel Guide (2011): "The new positive train control system (PTC) will be in place on all trains by 2015." What is the status of this system? Has it been installed on all trains? Just curious.

What I miss about Amtrak train rides . . .

All of the above, but also the majestic grandeur of the Union Stations. Washington, Portland, LA, Chicago, San Diego. Beautiful train stations, in my opinion. Also opening my Bedroom’s curtain and viewing the early morning landscape in Nevada and Oregon!

Amtrak One-day Round trip Lodge trip - Christmas 2020

What a lovely train journey. Unfortunately not possible for me due to COVID-19 travel restrictions. Nice pictures, though.

    Adirondack Customs Thought

I hadn't seen those devices when I crossed the border there in June 2017. Interesting. Thanks for pointing this out.
