Connection time in Chicago

I'm planning to take the Cardinal to Chicago and connect to the CZ. There's officially 4 hours between Cardinal's arrival and CZ departure. What's the reality of that being reliably enough time? Thanks!
 
It's long enough that if you book it all as one trip then amtrak will take care of you if they miss it - put you up in a decent hotel and get you on the next day's train if possible. And while it is possible to check the ontime performance to get a number re average lateness, % that are too late, etc. and I haven't, my gut feeling is that it's likely enough time to feel pretty confident.
 
The westbound connections are generally pretty reliable. There is a lot of time and the eastern trains don't travel distances as great and so have less distance to pile up delays in.

I typically build in overnight layovers eastbound but do same day connections westbound.

With that said, there can always be catastrophic delays.
