I distinguish between three locations for my belongings based on convenience and security. My suitcases I leave downstairs on the luggage rack with TSA locks. The things that I wanna have handy but don't want in plain sight I put in a tote bag on the rack above my coach seat. My ID, cards, cash, and phone I wear in a small crossbody bag on my person 24/7. My experience is that in the observation car people including myself would ask someone who is familiar to them from time spent together on the train to watch their stuff while they go to the restroom or the café or back to their seat for something.

Your ideas are the way to go. The Sightseer Lounge is usually a fairly convivial place, and usually there's no issue there.

I really wish they would bring back the Observation Cars which were the last car on the train, offered a snack bar/bar, comfortable seating and a wonderful place to sit and watch the tracks come together. When backing into a station, there was a place where the Conductor would operate the brake valve, a horn and a train signal to the cab.

Much more calm and relaxed now, thank you and I got about 5 hours last night so I feel vaguely human. I’m on the tail end of my journey out to Minnesota and going through Montana where it’s about as visually appealing as a tabletop, but I’ve got my phone loaded with good music and I’ve got my embroidery, so I’m pretty content.

Thank you everyone who answered my questions.

You’ve arrived?

I was impressed by the big sky in Montana in June 2020. On that EB trip I was concerned about passing into Canada work driving up from Spokane., but that all went very smoothly.

As I was impressed by the Amtrak staff that cared for the cabin/coach. It was always kept very neat and clean. It was an afterthought to give her a bit of gratitude with a tip. Oh well next time.
