This advertisement for talcum powder was painted on the rock face and has since defied removal.

The article says:
Many feel the sign is an eyesore, detracting from the beauty of the park. Others consider it an early 20th-century historical artifact worthy of preservation.
I'm in the latter group. I love to see faded signs that were painted on the sides of old brick buildings, barns, etc. In this case, it's also railroad history.

The "See Rock City" signs that formerly dominated pre-Interstate highways within 300 miles of Chattanooga, TN, are slowly fading away as the barns and the roofs they were painted on disappear. Rock City kept a crew on the road almost year round painting and refurbishing them until the 1970s I think. It was a good deal for the farmer and the company benefited from the advertising. Occasionally I still find one fading away on a rural road in farm country.

I used to get a kick out of one along the PRR at North Philly...."Ice Never Fails" painted across an old ice house...a dig at "new-fangled" refrigerator's probably circa late 1920's or '30's...
