I was on 14(4) and we also had a trespasser incident about 15 minutes south of San Jose last night. Handled professionally with announcements throughout. About a 3.5 hour delay as it was a busy night for the coroner. Arrived to San Jose around midnight (give or take).

A UK study found that most "trespasser incidents" as we call them were likely to be intentional acts of suicide. I'm unaware of a US study to compare with the UK findings but the causes and motivations are likely to be similar.
At least in a specific case: it's been reported that Brightline in FL had the highest rate of pedestrian deaths by train in the U.S., and that the majority of them were apparent suicides.

In areas where train tracks are adjacent to homeless encampments, I think some of the incidents may be accidental, possibly linked to substance use or mental illness that makes the danger of trains less apparent to the victim.
