Favorite Sleeper car room?

I'm excited to have 3 different roomette locations to try out on my upcoming trip on the CZ, CS, and EB. From Chicago on the CZ, I'm in #21, which I understand will be on the upper deck of a transition/dorm car. Then I'm in #7 on the CS from Emeryville, which I understand to be an upper room in a normal sleeper car. Then I'm in #11 from Seattle back to Chicago, which I think is a lower room in a normal sleeper car. So I should have some things to compare for future trips.

Usually it's not a car's room #, but how far you are from the dining car. Car #5 is a long walk on a bouncing train.

I'd prefer to be farther from the diner, since 2/3 of my traveling party will now sleep through breakfast. Oh how things change.... However the booking system doesn't let you choose the car or rooms, and when I call to ask about changes, it's not consistent as to whether it's a fare increase to change cars, or not. I really don't understand why it should cost any more to switch locations when every Roomette is the same as any other Roomette.

It doesn’t cost money to switch rooms, but some res agents do not know.

It doesn't. But process involved is kind of complex and many agents don't know it. If they just pull up another room on the reservation system it will be at current bucket. They have to go through a more involved process to hold the price.

I am picky about rooms and always call and never book sleepers online. I just use the website for pricing for sleepers. If I get an agent that says it'll change the price, I either thank them or call back or have them get a supervisor or more experienced agent to help.

I get rooms I am okay with before finalizing the initial reservation. I understand it is marginally easier to switch rooms around before the reservation is complete than switch a completed one.
