My thoughts:
-Great to see a new breakfast item
-No real new lunch items other than the plant-based burger, but still good to see something new. I personally probably won't go for it
-New appetizers look interesting, looking forward to try.
-I like the choice to replace the tortellini with the rigatoni, I'll probably try it
-Not a fan of the desserts. I don't generally love toffee or blueberry and I very much dislike lemon. I will miss the wonderful carrot cake.

However, even though some of it's not up my alley, it's great to see Amtrak keeping things fresh and some of these I am looking forward to try.

And on the Amtrak website the new menu is not up there yet, so I don't think it's in service yet.

Salad has gotten tweaked and there’s the loaded baked potato with the chili as a new lunch choice.

The chili/baked potato was on the previous menu listed as "Savory Chili" ... "Vegan chili served either in a baked potato, or in a bowl".
Had it a couple of times last summer...pretty good.

Ahhh you are correct. I suppose I need to learn how to read the English language. Not sure how I missed that on the old menu. I guess you should never trust the claims of a carnivore on the vegan section of the menu. 😂

Well, the new menu lists it as two seperate items vs a single item on the old menu. Otherwise, appears to be pretty much the same thing.

Does anyone remember some great devils food cake desserts? I don't know when they disappeared - I think I'm remembering some really declious, maybe even three-layer chocolate or devilss food cake desserts from 2000 to 2006 or so.

And I did email some address at Amtrak a few years ago to ask if they would consider bringing that dessert back. I don't recall if I got any kind of reply or not.

And speaking of emailing Amtrak, what would be the best email address to use? Time has erased my memory the best way to send written comments to Amtrak.

I remember the Chocolate Bundt Cake that used to be served in the Diners on the Western Trains.

Except for the Bourbon Pecan Pie served on the City of New Orleans, I thought it was the Best Desert that Amtrak ever had!🥰

Rode the Coast Starlight end to end from Seattle last week, and they were using the new menu as the paper menu; however, they had none of the new desserts or entrees, and only two of the new appetizers--the coconut shrimp was not available. The brie and raspberry empanada was not bad, but the Mexican street corn, jalapeno, and black bean souffle was an abomination--if there was any black bean in it, I failed to identify it. The charred corn kernels were fine, but the 'souffle' was inedible--a rubbery solid mass the size and consistency of a hard boiled egg. Even my husband--who bless his heart does not believe in wasting food--could not finish his.

They did load the 'old' desserts, and the carrot cake and chocolate torte were excellent and the cheesecake acceptable. I was sorry that the Meyer lemon dessert and the chocolate toffee mousse weren't yet available, since they sounded terrific. Of course, by day two, all desserts had vanished.

Our LSA was overworked and harried, since the menu provided to passengers has only a passing similarity to what was on offer, resulting in people needing to be told what was really available and what wasn't. Add to that the fact that all of the desserts were gone by the end of the first day and he was having to deal with a grouchy group of diners. We have been onboard Amtrak enough to roll with things, and as a result he refilled our wine glasses repeatedly--since it was all he had to offer after dinner. I kept track of the number of refills so we could pay, but he waved my credit card away. "Hey, if they don't stock enough desserts, they have to expect that I'll be giving away the wine!"

I've always wondered, can Amtrak not do a quick restock at a station along the route instead of just being out of something for the remainder of the route? Or am I being too smart and expecting management to figure out stuff like that?
They could.... but that would be an additional expense to an already money-losing part of the business.

The railroads had en route commissaries, Santa Fe/Fred Harvey had several, though I misremember exactly where they were (Albuquerque and KC seem to ring bells, but there were more than just two). But they were intended to support multiple trains. Amtrak stopped using en route commissaries outside terminals soon after they took over food service themselves (initial Amtrak operations were wholly performed by the railroads, which did things as they always had, Amtrak just wrote checks at first).

Amtrak contracts with Aramark for commissary services, so I imagine they could work out something with them wherever Aramark has a presence, if they wanted, at additional cost. However, as far as I can tell, Amtrak only seems to have contracted for commissary services only in locations where several trains can be served, like LA (SW Chief, Starlight and Surfliners), Emeryville/Oakland (Zephyr, Capitol Corridor, San Joaquins), Seattle (Builder, Starlight, Cascades). I seem to recall the Starlight taking on at least cafe supplies at Oakland on some trips, btw.

Happy to see this thread pop up as I was just thinking of doing another trip but wasn't so sure I wanted to face the same menu again (I know - first world problem!). What I'd like to know is if - or for how much longer - those pretty bad flex meals are/will be the only dining options on the overnight trains in the east.

I don't think anyone has any idea when, if ever, they are going to do away with flex in the east and on the Eagle. There were a lot of rumors floating around sometime this year, but everything has gone pretty quiet.

The future of food service committee that RPA has a seat on has started up, and there is the report of Amtrak posting for chefs in Charlotte, but that's about it.

If I were to guess, I'd say no change before spring/summer 2023. I hope I am wrong, because otherwise I'll be subjected to flex on the Lake Shore in November.

I ve heard rumors the Meteor will have traditional dining when it returns in September. Nothing about any other train. A shame. You are paying first class prices for third class food. The difference in traditional and flex dining is striking.

We can expect the unexpected. Equipment and personnel cannot be predicted more than a month in advance it appears. What Amtrak doees need is to work on getting few standby locatios where it can be catered with extra food when thes class 1s delay.Travelers might not expect hau cusine but at least some kind of food even if only fast food.

One practice they have done was to load some extra supplies on Train 5 leaving Chicago, when they knew Train 6 was running out of supplies due to late operation or other factors, and then arrange to have the trains "meet" enroute, to transfer these supplies. Probably done by other trains, in various places...

Or...the infamous "panic box'....ordering KFC to go, supplied at some staffed station...not sure if they still do that.

Honestly, I would be fine with limiting desserts to dinner service, since most folks don't have desserts with their lunch outside of Amtrak-world, I suspect. That way there would likely be enough desserts for dinner service. Of course, YMMV on that!

We got a package of Cheez-Its and a bottle of water (in the sleeping car!) on a 6+ hour Silver Star delay last week. Can't get much more haute cuisine than that, amirite?
