Been reading for a couple years now, mostly travel Amtrak on the NER for visiting other people on the NEC. Done one long distance trip (coastal starlight), planning another big one for later this year: a cross-country trip from NYP to LAX. That promises to be quite an adventure!

Outside of Amtrak journeys, I've ridden a few hundred hours total between day and night trains in Asia & Europe, and I'm hoping some of the longer ones prepare me for the NYP -> LAX trip.

Welcome to Amtrak Unlimited.

Welcome, fellow New Englander! Your cross country trip sounds interesting. The Western trains are definitely worth checking out especially if you can splurge for a roomette or bedroom and have the opportunity to partake of the traditional dining.
Yep, we're planning to grab a roomette for and are looking forward to the dining!

Glad you are here! I know you will have a wonderful time on that cross-country trip. Please do come back with a trip report - many of us love to read about others' adventures (and I often learn a lot by reading them).
That's a good idea -- we'll also take a look through some of the trip reports for the trains we're going on to get some insights. I think writing one is something my travel companion will also be interested in.

Several years ago, we traveled from Greenfield MA to Seattle with my brother and sister-in-law via Washington DC, Chicago, San Francisco, and up to Seattle as a celebration of his retirement. They still call it the 'experience of a lifetime,' and their friends say they still can't stop talking about how fantastic it was. So...you have a lot to look forward, too, and so will your friends when you get back.
