Hello, Amtrak unlimited!
Jayne here from Minneapolis, took the kids (17&19 at that time) to Chicago for a great train trip last spring. We had two roomettes and the scenery was beautiful. (Spendy but first trip so opted for the privacy of the roomette.
Now back to try coach class and go somewhere and see a bit more of this gorgeous country. Paid the measly $299 ea. for rail passes for all four of us (throwing the bf in for fun) welcoming advice, warnings and what have you. Where should we go?

Wow, happy family doing it again. Post photos, and keep us advised. Have a great time.

I think if I had 10 segments and had to go in coach the whole way, starting from Minneapolis, I'd head to the Northeast, where there are lots of day trains between major points, and save the really scenic (and long) western trains for sometime when I could go in a sleeper. That way I'd only have to sit up in coach for a night each way between Chicago and the East Coast. To cover the best scenery on each route in daylight, I'd take the Capitol Limited eastbound to Washington and return west on the Lake Shore Limited from New York or Boston.

Once you're in the Northeast, there are any number of possible destinations. Besides the obvious big cities, you could plan a side trip to Vermont or Maine. Or for a break from the winter cold, maybe head south to Virginia or North Carolina before heading to New York or New England. What appeals?
