Amtrak’s own numbers show LD trains holding their own

Well, except for the host railroads saying "Nope, you can't operate your trains on our tracks."

A Flâneur in New York (and a bit of New Jersey) via Amtrak in COVID mode

That was great! Thanks for taking the time to post.

    Tampa

YW. The new hotel and Union Station are within walking distance of the cruise ship terminals too (at least T6, the northernmost one; T2, the southernmost one, might be a bit of a hike with a lot of luggage but the hotel shuttle should be able to take you). Hopefully there will still be a...

    Time to Change the Paradigm?

You know trains can turn around and do thing like two hours out A-B, then two hours back B-A, and repeat that a few times per day. Or even go A-B, B-C, then somewhere else. Or A-B, B-A, A-C, then somewhere else.

    Tampa

To maybe breathe some life into this thread, there is now a new Hampton Inn within walking distance of the station (like three or four blocks, depending on how you count them), at Meridian & E. Kennedy: Hampton Inn Downtown / Channel District Also a Publix is now even closer, at Twiggs &...

    Brightline/Virgin Trains (FEC) Update

I think my posts should be taken as seriously as those posts speculating whether an Amtrak Chicago - Florida train should go through Evansville vs Cincinnati. :) Perhaps the rest of this discussion should be moved to the Tampa thread in the Southeast sub-forum. Can a moderator move it, if...

    Brightline/Virgin Trains (FEC) Update

LOL true. I am not indignant (I think that is what the "indignantoj" typo is?) as to me it is all pie-in-the-sky anyway. I don't see Brightline ever making it to Tampa or frankly surviving at all long-term. I hope I am wrong but the financials are pretty horrible and at some point OPM (Other...

    Brightline/Virgin Trains (FEC) Update

Any idea who actually owns that land? I see a lot of development opportunity. Right across the street (Nebraska Ave.) are several huge blocks of parking lots screaming for a better use (they are on the way to downtown, too). Also seems like lots of opportunity along Nuccio Pkwy too which is a...

    Brightline/Virgin Trains (FEC) Update

What's wrong with the current Tampa Union Station? Seems to be plenty of room there and it is a bit closer to the downtown central business district than these three sites are.

Amendment to CR blocking furloughs and thrice weekly long distance trains

Yep, and indeed Acela trains were suspended completely for a couple of months during the lowest ridership around April / May.

How much would it cost for Amtrak to build their own tracks nationwide?

A new HSR line shouldn't go straight through an established downtown of a city. In this case it would probably be most sensible to put the State College station somewhere south of downtown (PA26 / PA45 / Whitehall Rd. areas?) and encourage smart development around it. The university's campus...

How much would it cost for Amtrak to build their own tracks nationwide?

Just because a federal law passes the interstate commerce constitutional hurdle doesn't mean it wouldn't pass other hurdles.

    Time to Change the Paradigm?

Amtrak equipment travels more car miles per day than other countries' HSR equipment? Hours per day I would believe but miles - I dunno, HSR in Japan, France, etc. rack up a lot more miles per hour than Amtrak's LD trains do. A couple hours per day at those speeds would seem to yield more miles...

How about a train to Alaska? Talk about experiential!

Won't happen in my lifetime but it may some day (especially as global warming makes the Far North more inhabitable). If it ever does the purpose will be as a N. America - Asia freight bridge to ship cheap Asian junk to U.S. and Canadian consumers and wheat / soybeans / oil to China. So it...

    Best Chicago-Florida Route?

By the new CHI-CLE-PIT-PHL-NYP high speed route, connecting to the new NYP-DC-Raleigh-Florida high speed route via the upgraded Harrisburg-Baltimore Susquehanna River cutoff. :)

Inconsistent Service: A bigger problem than the food?

How did I suggest that? I don't really have an opinion one way or the other.

Inconsistent Service: A bigger problem than the food?

Don't get me wrong - good food is definitely a plus! But food just doesn't sway my decision all that much about whether to get a SLEEPer. Remember, once upon a time (not TOO long ago), sleeping car fares generally didn't include meals, both on Amtrak and on the predecessor railroads. (Yes I...

Inconsistent Service: A bigger problem than the food?

A lot of us pay primarily for the bed and private space. The food doesn't really factor into it for me and I doubt I am alone.

    Crescent:Why Two locomotives?

Yes I agree there is "some sort of market." One sort-of full train per day with a couple hundred seats doesn't mean there is a huge market.

    Crescent:Why Two locomotives?

Thanks. I have answered similar questions before which I don't see posed to other people here. (Apparently because I do not parrot the typical AU party lines on certain topics?) I love traveling by train and would love to see Amtrak's LD trains do well. Now its your turn! :)
