    In Transit, "Empire Builder" Film.

Maybe the 'middle class' are disappearing, business is quick to work out where the market is and that may be the reason? I think I was a little hard on Sam's choice, wasn't asked for my opinion and should have kept it to myself.

That would be very kind of you, thanks. As you're interested in train travel you probably know of the Seat61 website, but if not... The Man in Seat Sixty-One - the train travel guide... Mark Smith opened up the world of train travel to so many people, always willing to help too. Whenever we...

    COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Pandemic: Amtrak-related Discussion

Don't expect to hear from Milton for another day or so, and if he OK's me repeating his experience here it will be short, a man of few words. I'll drop him a line tonight to explain that others are interested as it affects them now. He's a kind person so hope he will oblige.

    COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Pandemic: Amtrak-related Discussion

Our friend Milton has just travelled from Los Angeles to Syracuse, NY by Southwest Chief and the Lake Shore Limited. He spends the three winter months in LA, then back to his farm to farm for the rest of the year. He needs the winter sunshine boost as he is no longer quite as young as he was...

@Samsbigtrip Sam? I think you will find that Billy Connolly rode the Empire Builder in his series Tracks Across America, Part 1. It was shown on ITV so maybe you can find it somewhere?

Today 4 April 2020 BBC 2 at 8:00pm (UK time) : Start of a re-run of a recent Michael Portillo series 'Great Asian Railway Journeys'. More his skewed view of Asia than train travel, but if you like travel in general can get something from each episode.

    COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Pandemic: Amtrak-related Discussion

Agree, there are many scenarios where people still need to travel, life isn't so predictable now and sometimes folk have to move from one place to another either over short or long distance for expected or unexpected reasons.

The BBC has been threatened by this Johnson government they will lose their funding as it stands now, which would then mean they would have to source their own revenue through commercial means. That would also mean much of the public output (which is enormous) would have to be curtailed, not...

@Devil's Advocate Sorry for the delay getting back to you, internet and computer problems combining. I'll do what I can and be pleased to do so. It will arrive bit by bit so do you want the info published here or a thread of it's own in the appropriate part of the forum, wherever that may be...

    In Transit, "Empire Builder" Film.

In the UK at the moment and for perhaps the last 2 or 3 years there have been a large number of train themed programs on British tv, the interest in train travel there is enormous currently. In my opinion as 'In Transit' gets closest to the flavour of long distance train travel by quite a long...

    Superliner Bedroom - Dumb question

We've travelled on Amtrak LD trains a bit now and for both of us it's about 'train travel and the people onboard' not the equipment. That's not to say that we/I don't appreciate the rolling stock, just don't pay it any special attention. That's my excuse for this dumb question. Are Superliner...

    COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Pandemic: Amtrak-related Discussion

My two penniesworth... a view from an alien I think you are all being a little hard on crescent-zephyr, he's? obviously a man who travels in solitary anyway, and would be someone who would minimise any spread of the disease, add to that the US situation is changing so fast (just like everywhere...

    COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Pandemic: Amtrak-related Discussion

Thank you very much Thirdrail7, it's a journey home where his work is. If the US base restrictions on what is currently happening here in Europe he would still be allowed to travel, his job is essential, it's food production.

No it's not a vacation, just getting from A to B. He would be catching the Lake Shore I think on arrival day, or the next day. Like your idea, sounds like an adventure.

    COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Pandemic: Amtrak-related Discussion

Question for a friend. He has a ticket for the Southwest Chief on the 31 March, Lax to CHI. Is there any inside information as to whether all rail transport will be stopped or are the major LD routes almost guaranteed to run? Thanks
