Virgin Trains USA (Brightline) Orlando Extension

From my perspective, I think as long as Wes Edens (Fortress) has some involvement with Brightline they'll focus on rail. Based off interviews he seems to be pretty dedicated to making the passenger rail part work. Of course, people eventually come and go and who knows what will happen once he is...

    Brightline takes over XPress West!

Could they just use Metrolink’s line from Rancho Cucamonga to Union Station? Even if they’re limited to 80 mph, it’s better than nothing and Metrolink could electrify the San Bernardino line in the process.

    Brightline/Virgin Trains (FEC) Update

Isn’t TUS getting high level platforms (if they haven’t already)?

I wonder if he's using Amtrak equipment?

    Brightline/Virgin Trains (FEC) Update

Surprised the Channelside site (where there is a freight yard) isn't under consideration. Lot's of development going on there. I haven't been to Tampa in about 10 years and every time I look on Google Earth there's more construction!

    Silver Service changes?

Amtrak has released their July 2020 performance report and we get our first look at the Silvers since service was reduced on July 6th. And results are as expected. Every long distance route saw a decent increase in ridership (most in the 20% to 30% range) from June to July except for the Silver...

    Amtrak Service Reductions

One positive thing I took from the Flynn hearing was him recognizing that LD trains are an essential service and said more or less without saying it that they shouldn't be expected to be a money maker. There was also an interesting question about why Amtrak counts states subsidies as revenue...

Will full service dining ever return to the Western trains?

I almost wonder if the low mode share for rail on long distance trips is because of the barebones national network. It really doesn't make sense to look at total mode share when you can look at Amtrak's own load factors and see that long distance trains are near the top of the list and point to...

Will full service dining ever return to the Western trains?

At least Amtrak gives a date for the return of traditional dining, even if it does keep getting pushed back. I'd be less optimistic if they went the Sunset Limited "service has been suspended, and future service has not been determined" route.

    Brightline/Virgin Trains (FEC) Update

I was unsure if Virgin ever made the investment in Brightline after the IPO never happened.

    Brightline/Virgin Trains (FEC) Update

It sounds like Virgin never paid Brightline even pre-pandemic. I prefer the Brightline branding over Virgin Trains, so I'm not sad to see it go even though operationally they still referred to themselves as Brightline and the only mention of Virgin from a passenger perspective was at Virgin...

Triweekly service will be overshadowed by drop in revenue

The expanded consist has been the case since service was reduced 3x weekly for the Star (and 4x weekly for the Meteor) on July 6th

Triweekly service will be overshadowed by drop in revenue

Are you sure that was the Star? The Star and the Meteor are using the same consists: 5 coaches, 1 lounge, 1 sleeper diner, 3 sleepers, 1 baggage car

Will full service dining ever return to the Western trains?

Somehow Deutsche Bahn is able to serve this with only one person in the bistro car. Looks far better than any Flex Dining meal on Amtrak.

    Silver Service changes?

Eh...I think Branson is more interested in making a profit, investing in Brightline is just a means to a way. That said, based off interviews it does seem that Fortress founder Wes Edens may have an interest in passenger trains.

    Silver Service changes?

The Auto Train isn't even necessarily faster. Winter Park to Alexandria on 97/98 is 16h 44m compared to 17h on the Auto Train over a shorter distance. Not to mention that Sanford and Lorton aren't large cities and have far less transit connections than Orlando and DC.

Staffed to Unstaffed Stations Master Thread

I just noticed that Amtrak has part-time positions listed for customer service representatives at Lamy (2), Maricopa (2), Cincinnati, Garden City, Ottumwa, Topeka, Texarkana, and Fort Madison.

Flexible dining - Requesting a review from a recent rider

Does the Lake Shore have the dining car (“sleeper lounge”) or just cafe? That could be the distinction.
