Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad

Have just checked out the first part of the route and it's possible to reroute and just about make the train following Thanksgiving 2021, now that would be something to look forward to for all sorts of reasons, thank you very much for suggesting such a splendid day. Will reply to your pm this...

Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad

Yes a step up transformer is required, an adaptor for the different plug into the transformer and different gas bottles with appropriate connectors. Yes LHD, originally built for the German market so all set there. You're right, we have to get into other forums too but this is our 'home' forum...

Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad

First I have to write we will be shipping our small RV to the US, apart from around 4 or 5 rail journeys that will be the majority of our transport. This adventure will not start until October 2021, Covid allowing, and should last 12 months except for a mid-way return to Europe for around 2 1/2...

Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad

Are the engines swapped according to seasonal changes ie at the end of a summer, or are they changed on a day to day basis? We wont have much leeway on dates as this is a part of a much longer journey and I hear that some popular campgrounds become fully booked frequently so booking ahead may...

Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad

Looks like the D-S is a must do now, so many here have happy memories. With a little research found a campground (United Campgrounds) just north of the town, it's on the Durango trolley route. What's amazing is the railway runs right through the campground, how fabulous. Much of what was...

Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad

Just taking a break as it's raining and first thanks everyone, usual superb information from this forum. Working out approximate routes makes the Durango-Silverton train easier to access as we would pass through the town anyway. For the Chama- Antonito C&T we would have to detour.

Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad

Moderators, please move this if inappropriate for this section. We are not usually customers of private or tourist rail, it's just not our thing. We prefer long distance commuter train journeys and would include all of the LD Amtrak trains in that. We may be passing close to Durango and if the...

Three Weeks. 8,000 miles on six trains. 14 hotel nights.

Thank you John, enjoyed your report too in particular the detail. May I ask how you inscribed your route in orange onto the Amtrak system map?

    21 TE issue last night?

OK, I understand now. My simplistic meaning of vegetarian is without meat only, anything else is ok. Thanks for taking the time, much appreciated

    21 TE issue last night?

Well, a little tongue in cheek... If onboard meals have deteriorated as much as reported here then thank you for any information. All our Amtrak journeys have been substantially improved by information volunteered on this forum. We are planning a longer US journey (non rail) but to include...

    21 TE issue last night?

That's good news re the TE Jim, thanks for letting us know. What is the plan for the auto train? We're planning to re-visit the US in Fall next year on the basis that by next Spring the world is in a different place to today. The TE journey is part of the plan although not in the Fall, we are...

Rail nationalisations may be coming down the track

Couldn't agree with you more providing we don't end up with a situation such as Amtrak's, second class citizens of the US rail world. I do think that in general Asian countries are far more forward thinking than other regions in respect to future transport. Europe is old and extremely...

Rail nationalisations may be coming down the track

May I add to that a very dislocated network that used to be run as a connected whole. One of the UK's problems was poor working practices but dedicated workforce, with the main problem being massively underfunded for far too long due to ideology. Look what happens when government fully funds a...

Rail nationalisations may be coming down the track

To help a fellow Brit out here maybe the American understanding of Socialism and the European version are different. In the US you appear to link Communism and Socialism as very close and similar ideologies, that doesn't happen to so much in Europe, they are seen as different ideas. It's...
