    Sleeper train revival in Europe

But on a plane or bus, people are sleeping out in the open. There's no privacy, but there's also safety in numbers. I think many people would be uncomfortable sleeping in an enclosed space with 1 to 5 strangers, as in a couchette. You point out hostels. Yes, hostels have their market (a...

    Secretary Pete

Anyone else watch Secretary Pete's confirmation hearing today? There was plenty of talk about Amtrak and the Gateway Project, mostly in the first hour or so. One senator brought up restoring service along the Gulf Coast. I hadn't known that Pete was heavily involved in getting funding for...

    Sleeper train revival in Europe

I saw one trip report that said a particular train was scheduled to spend a couple of hours standing in an enroute station, just so it's departure and arrival times would be at reasonable hours. I think the departure was somewhere around 10pm, and the arrival around 6am.

    WDW 50th Anniversary Trip!

Fast Pass is gone for the duration. Everyone waits in line. No one knows whether it will come back after the pandemic, or in what form if it does come back. I think before the shutdown, concierge & club-level guests only were able to purchase a few additional FP's at a steep cost.

    WDW 50th Anniversary Trip!

That's no longer true, according to the official website. But I was wrong: only Magic Kingdom park passes are sold out for 10/1. That includes for resort guests, according to the website.

Says you need "boiling" water. Don't know whether hot water from the lounge would be hot enough to get satisfactory results (especially if you have to carry it to your room or seat before adding.) And if those are foil packets, or anything you need to hold on to, trying to pour hot water into...

    WDW 50th Anniversary Trip!

Do you have your "park pass" reservation? I heard that all reservations for all parks are taken for 10/1/21. (Currently, due to capacity limits, a reservation must be made for a specific WDW park for each day.)

New Amtrak Moynihan train hall at NYP

Like America's health care industry? A fine example of a public service being efficiently provided by customer-focused free-market organizations at reasonable cost with no corruption. ;)

I haven't stayed at a Hampton in a while. Do they have those do-it-yourself waffle irons? That would go a long way towards improving Amtrak breakfasts.

Amtrak Special for the Inauguration (1/19/2021)

This seems to me an overreaction. They're giving in to the terrorists. It makes sense for the president-elect not to use the train. It makes sense to enhance security around key government buildings. It makes sense to continue with the inauguration but close it to the public. Shutting down...

    Brightline Orlando Extension

A 3-hour trip is certainly long enough to enjoy lunch or a cocktail (or 2), but I think the order would have been activated by now if they wanted the cars in time for the planned start data of Orlando service at the end of 2022.

OK, I was looking closer to Union Station.

    Gravity toilets

I remember a 6th-grade field trip by train from Long Island to Washington D.C. I think it was still Penn RR back then. I was shocked and amused to flush the toilet and see the roadbed racing by below. :) It just seemed so 3rd world!

New Amtrak Moynihan train hall at NYP

But that was 5 years ago, and it was just one of "several options." Searching "Penn Station Hulu Theater", the only more recent reference I could find was that Cuomo mentioned it in a Jan. 2020 luncheon to business leaders. De Blasio said he knew nothing about it. I think it's just a...

    Brightline Orlando Extension

I don't know about it being elevated. I assume Miami is elevated because the ROW crosses several streets there. If I'm looking at the right place in Tampa, that wouldn't be the case if it comes in from the same direction as Amtrak. In fact, there is an elevated expressway and ramp that might...

Would Viewliners like these be possible (Or even Useful)?

I thought I saw a YouTube of a sleeper that had a mid-level corridor, and steps up or down to a foyer at each group of 4 rooms (2 upper + 2 lower), but I can't remember where it was or find it again. If I'm remembering correctly, passengers would be able to pass thru the car with no stairs...
