    First ever Amtrak Experience

The first Amtrak trip I took was on the Minuteman from Boston to Washington in 1974. I was amazed that I did not notice the train start moving because it was so smooth, and did not realize we had departed for a moment until I looked out the window.

Comparing Amtrak B/R fare to First Class Air Fare

I am going to visit my aunt in Florida. I thought that Bedrooms on Amtrak would cost about $8,000, and so I booked first-class plane tickets for $2,000 (flying into the local airport instead of Orlando; Orlando would have been cheaper). I checked Amtrak later, and Bedrooms weren't even...

Inaugural run of the new "Night Owl"

Amtrak even shows a picture of a VII sleeper with the new bedding:

Inaugural run of the new "Night Owl"

This gave me a good laugh! I think I saw the old blankets, although Amtrak advertises "Private rooms feature comfortable seating that folds into a bed, newly-upgraded bedding, pillows, towels and linens" for the new Northeast service.

    Seattle, WA

    Stressful on-board announcements

There were video monitors on the Talgo VI trains that showed a route map with current location, speed, and projected arrival times. In later years, they fell into disrepair or disuse. I was on a Coast Starlight where the cafe attendant's microphone wasn't working properly. But he continued to...

    Amtrak blankets

We keep hearing about Amtrak's getting new blankets, so it's possible a whole bunch of the old one would be available surplus. https://www.amtraktrains.com/threads/amtrak-teases-upgraded-bedding-amenities-for-sleeping-cars.76717/

Sunset Limited + Coast Starlight + Empire Builder in April

Sunset at the beginning of April in Portland is 7:38 PM, and at the end of April is 8:15 PM. EIther route, you miss some pretty spectacular scenery in the darkness.

Sunset Limited + Coast Starlight + Empire Builder in April

I think the Portland section scenery is more unique and extensive. The Seattle section gives you a short stretch of coastal running, then some beautiful mountain scenery. But the trip up the Columbia River Gorge has hours of incredible scenery.

    Carolinian Questions

My wife stayed at the Hotel Pennsylvania, and did not like it at all. The Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott New York Midtown Manhattan/Penn Station is right outside the door of the new Moynihan Train Hall, and has nice rooms (get a city view, or else you look out at the building next door a...

    Long haul train travel times

When I rode the Eagle from Los Angeles to Chicago, I was all excited waiting for a smooth, fast track after St. Louis. Smooth and fast never happened, but I did see lots of new fancy fence work along the tracks in populated areas.

Where is this car located on the California Zephyr?

The 530 sleeper is closest to the diner. Transition cars usually have an xx40 number.

    Long haul train travel times

When the Point Defiance bypass opens in Washington State, it will shave a few minutes off the running time between Tacoma and Olympia.

    Day Bedroom for 3 adults?

I would just give Amtrak a call--I'm pretty sure that three adults are allowed in a Bedroom.

A bunch of first timer questions

Welcome to the forum! I hope you stick around and post a trip report for us. There is room for a medium suitcase and a few other things, especially with just one person in the Bedroom. You can put something under the armchair, there is a little shelf over the armchair, and it's not too much...

It is a sort of comforter instead of the cheap blanket, and new pillow cases (whether or not the actual pillows or bed sheets are new, I'm not sure). It is currently in use on the Auto Train.

It would be nice if they could pull together the new bedding for the Boston to Washington sleepers..

Sleeping cars returning to WAS-BOS starting 05APR21

I have encountered this also. I think it is within standard operating procedure for the conductor to input that a ticket has been scanned when informed by the SCA that the proper person is in the room.

Sleeping cars returning to WAS-BOS starting 05APR21

My funky vision read this as, "They need prolific meal / rest breaks!" The most irritating LSA service deficiency I have experienced was boarding a tardy northbound Starlight in Emeryville. The cafe should have been open for another 20 minutes, but closed right at Emeryville. Many passengers...
