Nostalgic and Historic Amtrak Stations Still Used Today

I have not done this in a few years and with Covid restrictions I am not even sure I could try a field trip this year. But I used to take my physics class (well the students that wanted to go on a weekend) to Charlotte or Raleigh from Greensboro each spring. For the vast majority of the...

Nostalgic and Historic Amtrak Stations Still Used Today

I wish there would be a northbound train around 10:30 pm and it would make a fun return train ride from High Point to Greensboro for a baseball game. The High Point stadium is an easy walk from the train station and the southbound trains could work for arrival and a meal if a restaurants in...

Ugliest and Soul-less Amtrak Stations Used in Metropolises Today

Raleigh needed more space for customers. and the new station has that. What it needs is a small convenience store and a restaurant as well. I can't remember how much free space is there but I seem to remember 2 or 3 rooms that could work. The soul of the building may not be railroads no more...

    Disobedience on Amtrak

My wife and I took the Carolinian last month to visit a daughter in Richmond. She texted us about 4 police cars in the parking lot and the police ended up on the platform. We had a free pass from the Amtrak Credit card so we took the saving and went business class. Maybe something was going...

    Disobedience on Amtrak

In the case of my wife the man was going on about his net worth vs the pay of the Amtrak employees. It would seem he would be able to pay for a cab from Durham to Charlotte. Of course, maybe he was not as well off. :-) I guess there are taxi options, bus lines, or more than likely you are...

    Disobedience on Amtrak

I took the Carolinian from Raleigh to Greensboro last fall. We were on the platform for a few minutes and there was a LEO on the platform. I don't remember if this was Raleigh city police or Amtrak. I am sure it was not a county deputy sheriff. (I wonder if I posted about that last fall.) I...

    Crescent Configuration

I was on the Carolinian a few weeks ago to Richmond. The Carolinian was a bit late and he Crescent was still late and only boarded not much before the Carolinian did. The Crescent has better views with the mountains over the flat coastal plain after Raleigh, but the Crescent is not as...

    Disobedience on Amtrak

My wife witnessed someone get taken off the train in Durham on his way to Charlotte. Then we got back on to grab his things. He did not want to wear a mask. About two weeks ago another rider called a non-mask wearing out and the conductor was very nice but firm. She and her son masked up...

    Amtrak Carolinian and Piedmont Trains.

Would that get into Atlanta around 7-8 am. That could work, though I have no idea what facilities are around for a convenient turn of the train but the Piedmonts do run with engines on both sides of the train.

    Amtrak Carolinian and Piedmont Trains.

I live a few blocks from the NC/H-Line. I am close enough to grab the McLeansville and Superior control points for a bit longer until ATCS goes away. I started that about 4 months ago. Most is indeed Amtrak but I know a freight comes through around 4 AM and then 4 PM. There is a freight around...

    Amtrak Carolinian and Piedmont Trains.

I work at the Greensboro Science Center and operate the planetarium on some weekends. One of the visitors leaving my show mentioned she was from Raleigh and her and her son tookAmtrak to Greensboro. Next thing you know we are talking trains and Amtrak and I almost am late starting the next...

    Amtrak Carolinian and Piedmont Trains.

I wrote my original post after the Carolinian was delayed 45 minutes from Charlotte to Greesnboro and that is with double track. I was tracking what I think was the Amtrak and some freight with TrainMon5 and it looked, without knowing specifics, that NS let a freight in front of the Amtrak...

    Amtrak Carolinian and Piedmont Trains.

Thanks for the detailed analysis. Running the Piedmonts would sit better with me than starting the Carolinian in Columbia. I am sure if this happens I would be happy and getting a ticket as soon as I could to a day trip to Columbia.

One of my daughters just said (she will not be taking Amtrak for a long time)

That is what I was thinking. It is surprising that propeller type planes don't fly between the two cities, especially given the way I-95 works (or doesn't work). Greensboro to Charlotte is closer and I-85 is not the mess of I-95 either and there are multiple flights a day. I am not...

Maybe the pay of the airline employees is such they are not as stressed since they are not having to grovel for tips.

Personally I have never interacted with a rude Amtrak employee. Even when I was told to step back from the door it was done with a nice tone. Likely my threshold for rudeness out of an Amtrak employee is higher than other consumer facing workers.

    Amtrak Carolinian and Piedmont Trains.

I imagine in an ideal world we would not need the bus lines as much as Amtrak would be doing the heavy lifting for routes under 4 or 5 hours and the bus lines could be used to fill in gaps to small towns. I don't use Greyhound but I would hate to see a national network not be there. Plenty of...

So they have branded buses but don't run the buses. Sounds like a way to get of of paying decent wages and offering benefits. Which is the very problem I have with that sort of operation. I would not be so anti-gig economy if there were other realistic ways of having health care and such. But...

They have a route out of my city of Greensboro. They seem to follow the route of the Crescent in the southeast when one looks at the stations. I am not one to be overly fond of the gig economy and have yet to use Uber or Lyft and this bus company is in that mode of operation from what I read...

One of my daughters just said (she will not be taking Amtrak for a long time)

Just talked with my daughter and she did mention the rudeness of the conductor when she asked him a question just before they arrived at Richmond-Main Street. And she had a complaint about the lead time of the announcement of what gate to use for train boarding at Washington Union Station. I...
