    Empire Builder accident (9/25/21)

We were on HWY 2 between Havre and Shelby this summer as well.

    Empire Builder accident (9/25/21)

The language you quoted was talking about folks stranded in St. Paul, not on the Hi-line in MT.

    Empire Builder accident (9/25/21)

KGW, Channel 8 in Portland is now reporting Portland as a destination but they don't appear to get that it was the Portland part of the train that derailed.

    Empire Builder accident (9/25/21)

Yes, the Hi-line is thinly populated, but the Builder does run parallel to US Hwy. 2 and they should be set up for dealing with wrecks on it. There are places on the Builder's route that are less accessible.

Watching the Weather from a train

I have been on the Canadian National RR between Saskatoon and Vancouver in extremely cold weather so the vestibules between cars were heavily frosted and we were much delayed because nothing runs right at 40 below.

Canadian New Years Eve…what can I expect?

At New Years it could easily be much colder, or not - temps on the Prairies can vary widely and rapidly. And if it gets much below -20 F nothing runs right and the train tends to be late anyway, so you could be way late. I grew up in Saskatchewan, that kind of cold is literally a breathtaking...

Newbie with questions about becoming OBS Trainee

Welcome. I can't answer your questions, but someone here should be able to. There are some Amtrak employees (and ex-employees) here, but they may not see this for awhile if the're working. (posted at the same time as PVD)

The obsession with the past is hurting the future of passenger rail

Lackawanna Cut-Off Restoration Project - Wikipedia a lot of detail here, appears to be fairly up to date since it mentions things that happened this year.

The obsession with the past is hurting the future of passenger rail

Speaking of the past - I see that Scranton, PA has a new intermodal terminal in anticipation of commuter rail reaching it through the restored Lackawanna cutoff. What do you all think the chances of a restored Phoebe Snow running thru Scranton and Bingham to Buffalo are?

How cold does it get on Amtrak Trains

Exactly, didn't think I was being particularly obscure.

    Morning Paper in sleepers?

It would have the potential for literally buying good will, but also for alienating people along the route depending on what papers get bought and how that decision is made.

    Morning Paper in sleepers?

The Buffalo News is a great paper still and I think it's because it's locally owned and committed to its local regional region (WNY) in a way conglomerate owned papers just aren't. It's a far better paper than the Oregonian has been in recent years, and if you compare the economic health of the...

How cold does it get on Amtrak Trains

My memory of the CNR on Xmas trips home to SK is that it got fully frosted between cars but fine in coach. But that was a long time ago in different equipment and it gets crazy cold in CND in the winter.

Trip Report - Coast Starlight from Seattle

It's still an easier climb than Siskiyou Summit, which is why the train goes that way. Not sure how much north/south freight there is.

Also better to put the padding in after you cross the border.

Chicago to Toronto via Detroit and Windsor

I crossed the CND border (MT > AL on I-15) this summer by car. Had all my info loaded in the App except the test results which we had in email on our phones, went fine. Small snafu coming back with shortened hours at a crossing in MT which took us a fair bit out of our way, but otherwise fine...

Brightline, "conservative" policy, and the future of rail

Another example of this would be Spokane, the biggest City in eastern WA and the biggest for hundreds of miles, its metro area has grown by leaps and bounds since Amtrak was started, but the only service is the Empire Builder in the middle of the night. Tiny towns in MT on the EB route get much...
