Using Lyft at LA Union Station

Union station in Los Angeles, CA has a dedicated pickup and drop off location as posted below. Decide whatever transportation option you want to use. I have found Lyft to be most competitive due to promotions and availability of luxury vehicles including SUVs where prices come in at lower than...

Cellular and wifi at Penn Station

I guess reception will improve eliminating more deadspots as well as seeing large increases in speeds as multiple spectrum bands will be added with newer technology.

Cellular and wifi at Penn Station

I was wondering how existing cellular and wireless coverage is at Penn Station outside of the Amtrak lounge areas and areas close by entrance and exit ways such as deep at the platforms or concourses. LIRR is signing a deal this week with Boingo for Penn station wifi and cellular and I am...

    WiFi on longer routes

Not sure what was confusing. If you have a regular wireless phone like Iphone which is a non satellite phone, you will be able to pick up the frequencies as if it was broadcasting on existing wireless bands that the Iphone uses.

    WiFi on longer routes

The new satellite service working on existing phones will fix these issues in the future. But also there are a of smaller areas which have wireless coverage but you need a plan which require roaming in those areas to use them and not all plans have these as different carriers have different...

    WiFi on longer routes

Airlines use wireless or satellite depending on the aircraft and airline if they offer wifi.

    WiFi on longer routes

The satellite service will work with existing devices, not specialized equipment. Lets say you have an iphone. Only update needed would be a carrier update to the latest version if the device doesn’t have the newest one. The satellite service broadcasts the service where device sees it as...

    WiFi on longer routes

Amtrak just shares bandwidth for its trains. Existing providers will be using satellite in the future which will work on regular devices so coverage will improve on applicable plans. Coverage is superior on your own data plan as Amtrak will have shared service at a fixed speed which is shared...

First look at Moynihan Train Hall

Does Moynihan Station have taxis and car pickup or dropoff nearby? Or is it closer to Penn Station? People who use the Station will have a wider areas to choose from so it should help with traffic flow. If old Penn Station gets overcrowded, more space will be available in Moynihan. If I was...

    Mask Mandate for Transportation Extended

I posted awhile ago on the Amtrak forums that the mask mandate for vaccinated travelers and those with antibodies who had the virus before is absolutely ridiculous and Senator Rand Paul proposed a bill for such in congress. Unfortunately it seems unlikely to pass. Hopefully the SCOTUS will be...

    Amtrak Fire at Beech Grove

Thank you for the information regarding arson suspected. Beech Grove does indeed need additional fire suppression technology as well as better security. I am surprised this facility wasn’t already heavily monitored to prevent this from happening. Hopefully the perpetrator or perpetrators will...

    Amtrak Fire at Beech Grove

Amtrak police have done a good job every time I have used Amtrak in the past. I’ve been on trains with the dogs sniffing out the trains before looking for drugs or whatnot. The area where the two buildings were seems to have space for additional construction in the future if they decide to...

    Amtrak Fire at Beech Grove

ALC-42 is the future. Not sure if they will acquire ALC-42 in dual mode for the longer haul routes that use electric and diesel or choose another supplier than Siemens altogether. Beech Grove facility looks like it could use work so this fire will just force them to accelerate reconstruction...

    Amtrak Fire at Beech Grove

Regardless, the P40 which were reconfigured fo P42 and P42 are getting phased out as soon as the ALC-42 start arriving. ALC-42 in Amtrak liverly was last spotted at the Siemens plant in California a few weeks ago so it shouldn’t be that long before it is on the rails for Amtrak. Haven’t heard...

    Amtrak Fire at Beech Grove

Agreed its nothing major. As for the P40 822, was this an exhibit train or was it actively in service? Train had extensive body work and painting done as shown below. Doesn’t look to be a loss of service but also new replacements should be in quickly. Just a loss of materials and some new...

The P42 replacements are already on order. Deliveries couldn’t come soon enough.

    Amtrak Fire at Beech Grove

From what media has said, paint and cleaning supplies were in the two buildings. If Amtrak keeps the materials stored there and puts in replacement prefab structures, I would hope they add better fire protection including working water connections. Incident could have been a lot worse. Amtrak...

    Amtrak Fire at Beech Grove

Heard about the Beech Grove fire. I don’t believe anyone was hurt from reports I heard. Hopefully they can repair or rebuild the facility quickly and add appropriate working water connections and fire safety standards. I don’t know if it was intentional but apparently they are investigating...

    50th Anniversary Celebration

Richard Nixon signed Amtrak into law in 1970. Amtrak started service in 1971. United Kingdom’s HS2 project will be slightly faster than the new Avelia Liberty train. UK is a much smaller country. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Speed_2
