    Empire Builder accident (9/25/21)

I need to correct myself. The prior accident at Buelow was on March 7, 1966 following I believe a two day blizzard. The engineer of the Empire Builder and the engineer of a Passenger Extra were both killed and there were many injuries but no other fatalities. Great Northern President John M...

    Empire Builder accident (9/25/21)

No, it was a head-on at Buelow, Montana around 1964, maybe 1962.

    Empire Builder accident (9/25/21)

Sadly this is not the first time there has been a passenger train accident at Buelow which has resulted in multiple fatalities. The earlier one, if I recall correctly was a head-on around 1964 between two Great Northern passenger trains (can't recall which ones offhand) and it was far worse (14...

    Amtrak Dining

The eastern trains should be operated as the premier trains of the system, not as cast-offs. They should feature those amenities which compel customers to divert from airlines and highways. At present they seem to appeal only to die-hard railfans and those who are hesitant to fly.

    Favorite Sleeper car room?

Pretty much any upper level roomette on the Portland sleeper at the rear of the Empire Bulilder or on the Texas Eagle thru sleeper at the rear of the Sunset. A bedroom ifI can afford it. On viewliners I have no preference except I enjoy a roomette in the Boston sleeper on the Lake Shore on...

    Entertainment on the train

The Pacific Parlour car had a theatre downstairs for showing movies. I went down to look at it once but never watched a movie there. It might have been alright after dark but I wasn't about to sacrifice the scenery on that run for a movie. At least in that car the showing of the movie...

You eat in your room? Why?

Aside from some snacks now and then I generally prefer not to eat in my room because I do not wish to encourage vermin in the sleeping cars. They should stay in the dining car where they belong.

    Entertainment on the train

When I am planning a long distance trip on Amtrak, I will try to photocopy some pages from a pre-Amtrak timetable from the 1940s or 1950s and bring it along. For a trip on the Southwest Chief, I will bring along some photocopies of certain pages from a Santa Fe timetable from the 1950s. It...

    Entertainment on the train

On a long Amtrak trip I usually take one or two books but I don't tend to get very far into them. I also enjoy meeting and talking to other passengers.

    Entertainment on the train

There used to be movies shown in the sightseer lounge car in the evening. We watched a movie when we were on the westbound Empire Builder departing Whitefish in 2001. However the movies were discontinued a few years later . There was a lot of discussion at the time and many people thought...

    Amtrak Dining

Common sense is not one of Amtrak's strengths. I am not sure that it is taught at Amtrak school.

    Morning Paper in sleepers?

I think the last local paper that I received as a sleeping car passenger on Amtrak was the Pueblo Chieftain (if I have the name correct) which I think was put on the westbound Chief at La Junta. I am guessing that this was probably around 2012. It seems that for a few years after that, USA...

    Amtrak Dining

I recall one round trip a few years ago on the Boston - Albany stub train which operated during the Albany yard reconstruction. If you were travelling by sleeper on 48/49 west of Albany you were entitled to a meal from the cafe car of the stub train. On my trip on the westbound stub train, I...

    Amtrak Dining

Any reasonable company which has priorities of good customer service and success would be able to resolve this issue in a prompt and satisfactory manner. Of course I understand from some friends that it does get resolved on some trains and that as sleeping car passengers they have been...

Sleeping cars returning to WAS-BOS starting 05APR21

It certainly does not sound like a world class idea but sadly I am beginning to think that it is a third world idea instead.

    Tier Qualification Points

I am thinking that I should hire you to plan my trips from now on!

Sleeping cars returning to WAS-BOS starting 05APR21

At least the PRR, even in the late stages of its life, could do some things right.

Sleeping cars returning to WAS-BOS starting 05APR21

Based on my experience on the Broadway in 1968, Amtrak's operation of the Boston - Washington sleeping car service is quite a few notches lower.

Sleeping cars returning to WAS-BOS starting 05APR21

The bottom line is that this is Amtrak (and not GN, NP, UP, PRR, NYC, CN, CP, etc.) so there is obviously no solution.

Did the CZ combine with another train out of Chicago in the past

I believe that there were times, pre-Amtrak, when the CZ and the Denver Zephyr were combined between Chicago and Denver. We probably need to call in a CB&Q expert on this.
