    Empire Builder accident (9/25/21)

I think this story hits so many of us, because of the fatalities. There have been many Amtrak derailments that looked worse, yet no fatalities. The EB derailed in the area back in the late 80s or early 90s when it hit a dump truck at speed. I do not call recall if there were fatalities. Many...

    Empire Builder accident (9/25/21)

Thanks for the info. I remember that day. In the Chase incident, lets be thankful that first Amfleet coach was empty. As regards it crumpling like an empty coke can, Decelerating from 120 mph to 0 mph in an instant may have something to do with it. Much respect to the Budd engineers who...

    Empire Builder accident (9/25/21)

The Superliners are an amazing piece of engineering and my hats off to the Pullman engineers that found a way to keep the CG so low in a tall car. But on an embankment, physics again takes over. The unfortunate thing about sitting 16 feet in the air, further to the ground when rolling over...

    Empire Builder accident (9/25/21)

Amtrak has removed the train from the tracking website.

    Empire Builder accident (9/25/21)

That explains the where the Portland section was, should be behind the Lounge. Tight lock couplers are super strong but cannot overcome physics. Really, really, really, really hoping the five fatalities is a bad rumor.

    Empire Builder accident (9/25/21)

Tight lock couplers worked somewhat, there would be a sleeper and Coach behind that lounge. The separate car on its side is concerning. Hope injuries are kept to a minimum.

    Viewliner and Superliner Technical Drawings?

I believe Trains Mag had a 1979 issue with detailed plans of the Superliner. I think it was the November issue, I have it somewhere.

What's the deal with the Texas Eagle?

Just remembered, back when the then Eagle was tri weekly, it used to trade two coaches and a sleeper with the SL. Now we are down to one coach and one sleeper.

UK's Boris Johnson takes Amtrak to Meet President at White House

I am guessing it was Acela, imagine the security on that train on the ground and from the air. https://wgnradio.com/news/political-news/glimpses-britains-johnson-rides-rails-to-meet-amtrak-joe/ Johnson hopped aboard an Amtrak train in New York City on Tuesday, after addressing the U.N...

    Entertainment on the train

Bose QC35II Headphones, a good soundtrack on the Iphone, a window, and a smile on your face. You will wonder how the time flew by so fast. This applies to plodding along on a LD train through people's backyards to flying on Acela @ 130 mph.

Short Consists of Long Distance Trains

So why are Amfleet II coaches on midwest local trains and not on the LDs trains in the East? What happened to the Horizon cars? Finally gave out?

Part of 21 and 22 cancelled due to track work.

Maybe Amtrak will charter double decker MegaBuses, at least one could pretend they were on a Superliner going down I-35. 😆

Part of 21 and 22 cancelled due to track work.

On Trainorders, they are stating the the Texas Eagle will stop at FTW and bus to SAT. UP track work somewhere. Effective Sept 14. Do not know how long it will last.

Short Consists of Long Distance Trains

A testament to the workers of Pullman on how well they built their last product.

Short Consists of Long Distance Trains

In the 90s the Silver trains were 18 car consists during peak season, even though they used to split in Jacksonville and Aubundale. 18 cars! Go to the Plant City or Forkston video cams and you see these same trains with two or three sleepers and TWO coach cars. Would love to see year over year...

How Much Do Railroads Get Paid For Carrying Amtrak?

Ironic, since the 90s BNSF wanted Amtrak to move the Chief over to the transcon and now BNSF says "no". Good one Amtrak, good one. And I bet the costs for running the Chief are higher since they are the only traffic for the most part on the historic line. Back in the late 80s or early 90s...

    Hurricane Ida - 08/2021

You know somewhere in Amtrak's DC HQ this discussion is being made. For years there rumors of Amtrak wanting to have the Crescent end at Atlanta and not NOL. Or reroute to end at FTW in Texas. As regards the SL, what can be done to lower the costs of this route other than going Daily? One of...

    Lincoln service speed limit increased

I blame the state of Illinois for that. If you are spending good money subsidizing trains and being treated like that. Someone from the Governor's office should be calling NS HQ in the ATL. Said Dispatcher ( and those over him) would get an attitude adjustment or a new resume. Believe me, if NS...

    Lincoln service speed limit increased

Funny, I remember back in 1984, the State House ran from STL-CHI in 5 hours and 20 minutes. http://www.timetables.org/full.php?group=19841028&item=0043 Oops, I was wrong, the F40 and five amfleets did it in 5 hours 10 minutes, the Eagle took 5 hours and 20 minutes.
