Bucket List trip May 2020: trains 421, 4 and 50

Most attendants make the announcement, during their run-through when we get on, to use the call button to let them know we need the bed put up or down. I "got over" being shy about doing that.

Bucket List trip May 2020: trains 421, 4 and 50

The only place it is acceptable for a passenger to be drunk is in their own sleeping accommodations. If they bother other passengers or are drunk and obnoxious in public parts of the train, they will be removed. I've seen it happen. Nice tea set! I did not see how you heat the water -- was...

I'm still here (trip from Denver to Orlando)

I am so happy that it worked for you, and that the delay didn't put you off traveling Amtrak again. It sounds like it all worked out for you. I think we are all looking forward to the day when we can feel easy about traveling again.

Oh, what a grand adventure! You bet I am along for the ride, reading your story as you go.

Amtrak One-day Round trip Lodge trip - Christmas 2020

I asked on another thread and was informed that the (ambiguous) wording on Amtrak's notice actually means that you must MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CANCELLATIONS BY MAY 31st in order to receive the full refund. Sounds like a lovely trip for those who live within range, though. I have stayed at the...

    Updated Amtrak Website

Well, I went to the Empire Builder page and I got the Amtrak Advisory | Amtrak to Operate on Modified Schedules (in a new tab). Backed up, tried the California Zephyr, and got the same thing, and on the Coast Starlight too. I see that the URL says it's about the NEC, but it seems to be on every...

    Updated Amtrak Website

I could not get the drop-downs on the home page to work for filling in stations or dates. The screen returning the error code when I tried had full functionality, and I was able to see a trip. Of course, they did still have not loaded the AmBus connection between Pasco and Walla Walla. No, you'd...

What I miss about Amtrak train rides . . .

Oh, so many things listed above! And also... The "Me" time for three days as I cross the country, where the direction of my thoughts and my hands belongs only to me. I knit, crochet, read, nap, talk to people, or just watch the scenery as I please. The rocking motion of the train, which keeps...

Cancel without penalty by May 31? Or Make the reservation by May 31, then 11 mos out to cancel?

Yes, thanks very much to Jamie for calling and getting that clarification. I agree that the wording on Amtrak.com is very ambiguous, as was the wording in the email they sent out. That's why I needed to ask. Making assumptions can cost you later on, and I always hate to have put myself in that...

Cancel without penalty by May 31? Or Make the reservation by May 31, then 11 mos out to cancel?

That is what I was afraid I was going to hear. In that case, no hurry at all to make the reservations. If Sis comes up with some dates, I will use Amsnag to choose the cheapest days. Lots of points racking up right now, from the promotions and the stay-at-home and no-touch shopping.

GPS Device for use on Long Distance Trains

Thanks for all the good advice I am finding here. Like the OP, I use a simple phone with a prepaid plan. I do, however, have a hand-me-down Garmin that I use in my car. I may take it with me next time! Will only need to purchase a 117V to 12V adapter with a socket. With the phone and iPad, that...

    AGR Bonus Points

I participated in the promotion late last year to add a name to my card (added Hubby), and the points came when the promotion was OVER, by which time I had totally forgotten that I was due *anything* extra, so it was a lovely surprise, LOL. Since this current promotion runs through the end of...

Cancel without penalty by May 31? Or Make the reservation by May 31, then 11 mos out to cancel?

I'll call, but I need to wait till things calm down a little in Massachusetts and my sister can actually think that far ahead about dates. 😉 Meanwhile, if anyone else asks that question, I'd like to know what they get for an answer. It will affect my timeline for making reservations. After all...

Cancel without penalty by May 31? Or Make the reservation by May 31, then 11 mos out to cancel?

Here's a question I've been having (while dithering about making a reservation for a trip next winter). I received an email from Amtrak that said: So, it says the reservation must be MADE by May 31. But not that any cancellations or changes must also be made by that date. So the...

Refunds on Saver and Value fares

Here's a question I've been having (while dithering about making a reservation for a trip next winter). I received an email that said: So, it says the reservation must be MADE by May 31. But not that any cancellations or changes must also be made by that date. So the implication is that we can...

Wow, I was actually able to see the forum and log back on today (atfer several days of the "back soon" screen)! Still getting used to the changes. Like the new emoji responses.

    Egypt by Rail ~ 2020

And while I very much appreciate the photos and the travelogue, I do hope that you don't have too close a brush with COVID-19. I see that Egypt has 93 cases, and I know that number is bound to go up. I hope you are able to practice social distancing and stay well.

    Newguy

Welcome, and ask away! I learned almost everything I know about Amtrak here -- how to find the days with the best price (go to Amsnag http://biketrain.net/amsnag2.0/amSnag.php), how to check the on-time performance of a train, and whether it reliably makes a certain connection...

    27 breakfast SPK-PDX

There were other categories you could choose from, for a total of three. One was cold cereal (also sugar-laden) with milk. We found those two items to be the only ones we would actually eat. I'd rather go hungry than eat yet more sugar. You were expected to carry your breakfast back to your...
