COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Pandemic: Amtrak Food Service Discussion

Huh? Southwest offers free drinks and snacks to all passengers. And is always sending me coupons for free alcohol. By contrast Amtrak business class passengers get less than southwest passengers.

COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Pandemic: Amtrak Food Service Discussion

Service wise southwest has been consistently very good in my experiences. The free checked bags and no cancellation fees are wonderful. The only problem is the cramped 3 across seats. Usually I can find a delta or American first class seat for just a little more $$$ if my travel times are...

COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Pandemic: Amtrak Food Service Discussion

Well.... I just spent some time over at FlyerTalk and people are getting pretty much nothing on the major airlines. Bag of cheezits and a bottle of water in delta first class! If the airlines, hotels, and Amtrak don’t want our business, then the travel industry will never recover.

Well yeah, if they don’t advertise a service they don’t have to provide it.

Amtrak sleeping car prices include meals. They can’t stop providing meals and charge the same price. They can, and are, lowering the quality of said meals. There is no guarantee of a particular menu, but they do have to provide the basics of what they advertised.

I never rode the auto train but it was the same on the empire builder, coast starlight and Lake Shore. Those were the days!

That calculation doesn’t even work for hotel restaurants. There is no possible way it would work for Amtrak.

How do feel about riding "Coach" ?

There’s not a simple answer. Which is the problem. There is the physical cost, and maintenance on the dining care itself, there is the staffing and taking car of said staff (hotels and transport at the terminal, roomette space on the train,) the cost of delivery, cost of food & supplies and food...

You used to be able to get some pretty good wine on the trains. Especially back in the starlight, builder, & lake shore wine tasting days. It’s sadly been a while since I rode a full-service diner but the half bottle selections used to be decent.

To be clear, I was asking about dining on the trains that I would be taking to get to the lodge. I doubt the lodge will be full with everything going on right now, so probably not too difficult to keep the restaurant at 50%.

Was afraid of that. When all this started I was thinking I should take my last trips with a real diner while I still could :-/

Sorry... I think I was on a different page or a different track if you want the pun! The half bottle is not on the menu, I was saying it’s odd that the half bottle is not on the menu if it’s still being carried and stocked in the lounge car. But either way, it’s good to know the half...

Right. I was saying the only reason they need to be an LSA is if they handle money correct?

New dining options (flex dining) effective October 1, 2019

Well if they weren’t selling anything they don’t need to be LSA’s correct? The contemporary menu doesn’t list the half bottles.

That’s good to know! Of course it doesn’t really make sense why they wouldn’t sell them in the diner but that’s nothing new for Amtrak.

One of the posters on this board says they originally served half bottles. They aren’t listed on the contemporary dining menu.

How do feel about riding "Coach" ?

It’s a small town local diner price. That price does exist, but nobody should expect prices like that when traveling. I would argue that Amtrak dining car prices are too low actually.... but then you get into the quality of service, quality of some entrees and inconsistency. Ideally, the...

How do feel about riding "Coach" ?

Actually yes. But it was a unique situation where I knew the server from previous trips. It was also a superliner diner not a heritage. The problem with Amtrak is the consistency. I’ve had terrible food on Amtrak so I can’t argue with your personal experiences because the food you were served...
