#91 Silver Star Schedule Change in Florida 11/15-12/2/21

Update! (And rumor control.) I was in the area again and one of the track workers happened to be walking by so I asked him. It is rail replacement, not a second track. The widening I thought I saw was just redoing the crossings.

    Sunset Limited and Phoenix

Why is that a BS response? The law was only signed two days ago.

Remembering the Golden Age that Preceded Amtrak

Cool photo but it looks staged IMO which is probably why people look relatively dressed up.

Interesting Article Opposing High Speed Rail

There is a lot of focus in this thread on the NY-Chicago rust belt route. I know this won't be a popular view here but frankly, I am not sure it makes sense to make such a huge and controversial infrastructure investment in an area of the country that is shrinking (or at best growing only very...

    Brightline (FEC) Update

Maybe I am misunderstanding something, but why would Polk County have anything to do with a Tampa to St Pete route (which would be in Hillsborough and Pinellas Counties and go nowhere near Polk)?

Lots of new rail, some grading, didn't notice crossties but didn't think to look for that.

#91 Silver Star Schedule Change in Florida 11/15-12/2/21

Interesting, I was in Ybor City (Tampa) the other day and saw a lot of construction on the line, so I assume this is related to that. I was told - by a non-foamer - that CSX is double-tracking it. Does anyone know if that is accurate?

    $66 billion for Amtrak

Neither. It was simply no urban planning at all.

    $66 billion for Amtrak

Yeah Hillsborough County (which is Tampa) couldn't even get a 1% tax increase for improved public transit to stick. Cars cars cars is all people down here care or even think about.

I understood your point, hence the ":)." :)

    Winter Park Express is back

Well, there is not really much to see on the TE. The scenery from Denver to Winter Park is way better. :)

    Autotrain Services Drastically Cut?

I think he means the all-bedrooms-on-the-second-floor sleeping cars (no roommettes), which are unique to the Auto Train. (The bottom floor is the same as the rest of the fleet.)

    Amtrak Dining

I just googled that. I had no idea!

Is the dining car menu really "infrastructure"?

Can the Coast Starlight route be extended?

I am not sure that is as common as you seem to think ("tend to," like over 50% of them?). But even for those that do, while "overnight" meaning leaving in the evening and arriving the next morning might attract a few of them once in a while, no way are they going to want to be in transit for...

    Train speed.......historically speaking?

Oh is that all they have to do.

    Train speed.......historically speaking?

I think it is also tough to compare the end-to-end times of the banner trains of yore to today's Amtrak trains when talking about track speeds. The old banner trains had the advantage of being given priority over all other trains over their whole routes, unlike the situation today with Amtrak...
