    Brightline East update

Notice I wrote “HrSR,” instead of HSR By that I mean 110-125.

    Brightline East update

Agreed. When in St. P, I was shocked to see that the bus route I was closest to only came twice a day. A funny anecdote and back on topic, I promise: Upon this poor bus-performance realization, my wife and I rented a car. The first question I was asked was regarding car insurance (to which he...

Amtrak service cancellations and restorations (2022)

Does Amtrak usually run a 6am NYP-BOS Acela on Saturdays? Is there any chance they will introduce an additional morning frequency on June 4th? Kind of surprised there's a BOS-NYP 6am but not a reverse. Though it does make sense since its going to NYC.

Maybe he's referring to them hiring only 18 people.

Amtrak service cancellations and restorations (2022)

Yes, my oversimplying this was rhetorical at best. But I think this does hearken to a larger sociopolitical debate around whether or not private enterprise does a better job at providing public services. For example, Brightline not running trains for a year and a half in order to preserve cash...

Amtrak service cancellations and restorations (2022)

Perhaps this situation will make us question whether or not private enterprise (or quasi in Amtrak's state) has any place in the realm of public services.

Amtrak service cancellations and restorations (2022)

Any updates on 65-67? I'd heard from someone that June was the selected restart for this train, but it seems the plug has been pulled on that. Trying to catch a train from NYC to Boston (need to be downtown by 10am) but its looking like the flight is the only option, as NEC service is still...

    Brightline East update

This is true, but the US will never have a truly viable alternative to driving in places other the biggest metro areas at least in the next 50 years.

    Brightline East update

Agreed, though a symptom of a larger problem: a car dependent society. Taking away licenses from these sizable groups would render too many immobile, and it would never fly in government, as they continue to push for car dependency.

    Brightline East update

A little off the current topic, but the number of serious incidents involving a car and a Brightline train is beginning to become ridiculous. Aside from elimination of grade crossings, what can be done here? Higher fines, security cameras at all crossings, zero tolerance policy (lost license on...

    Improving the Downeaster

The timing is tough though. Its twice a day, and often better just to schedule a concord coach and amtrak ticket separately. Concord Coach and Greyhound are the only buses in Maine, and they really don't service many destinations.

    Improving the Downeaster

Belfast wouldn't be too far from the Rockland ConnectUS extension. None of these routes (beyond rockland) would be feasible without significant capital costs anyways. Given that Camden, Linconville and Northport are all on the way (with ferries to lots of important summer islands like Islesboro...

    Improving the Downeaster

That section of track before Exeter on the northbound is pretty horrendous. It really slows things down, and it’s uncomfortable. Double tracking larger sections of the route would help too. A 6th round trip would be great! Also making it more reliable and extending it to Belfast. The extension...

    Amtrak dining

I was able to use my iPad at the table and get some work done while waiting for my meal aboard the EB in December. It was just my wife and I and we often were eating at non crowded times.

Lawmakers want Amtrak line from Atlanta to Nashville

Actually, I think most on this forum are very aware of the fact that this country’s transportation system vastly favors cars to all else. Even the current gas situation doubled won’t change that. For all people outside of the NEC, parts of California and a few select metro areas, trains make...

Amtrak service cancellations and restorations (2022)

Pretty insane that 65/66/67 isn’t running. Anyone know the official/real reasons for this?

'Miles In Transit' rides the subways of Toronto and Montreal

I find RM transit to be a little too pro rail (if that’s possible. Sometimes it seems like he rejects what might be an otherwise good non-rail transit option just because it isn’t rail. Miles is a funny guy. I met him on the inaugural night owl in 2021. Nerdy as they get

Amtrak goes straight to STB to restore Gulf Coast service.

My response was meant to be more rhetorically funny than anything else. Neroden is right. Given that CSX is under siege so to speak, leaving a luxury exec train on the Amtrak siding is akin to leaving a gate open. It’s plain dumb.

North East Corridor (NEC) speeds and state of repair

I noticed the South Station Expansion Project is still listed on this report. As the current air rights project and tower above the tracks is not really part of the official SSEP, do you have any insight into where the actual expansion stands (namely the push from 13 tracks to 20+ tracks)? I...
