CZ and SWC sleepers removed (downgraded to coach)

I am booked on the CZ in a roomette on August 28th, #5 from CHI-SAC. Fortnately, I am in 0531 the "base sleeper" for the CZ, so hopefully the reservation will not be downgraded. (Fingers crossed!)

What happens when Texas Eagle 422 arrives in San Antonio after 22 departs?

Based on my reading of previous posts on the subject, Amtrak has a plan in place to bus folks that were on the 422, to catch the TE further north. As the previous poster mentioned, the 22 Eagle would have departed over 2 hours late, not just 20 minutes, since it takes time to attach the 422 cars...

Temporary service changes between ALB and SDY (July-August 2022)

Well, apparently there are no significant speed restrictions between ALB and SYD.. The LSL (8/1) arrived 3 minutes early in Chicago - a rare event on any day, much less with all the hoopla regarding the teetering building. So, it looks like smooth "railing" for the time being.

Temporary service changes between ALB and SDY (July-August 2022)

Looks like the LSL 49(31) successfully completed it's bus bridge in Albany. It departed from Schenectady over two hours late, but that makes sense - it many only be about 20 minutes from the two cities, but you have off load everyone from the train at Albany, put them and their luggage on to...

Amtrak service cancellations and restorations (2022)

Per Amtrak, California Zephyr #5, departed 7/27, terminated in Denver due to maintenance in Moffat Tunnel. A 1005 Zephyr will continue on from Salt Lake City. I wonder what options passengers would have, and how much notice did they receive?

    Amtrak Siemens Charger locomotive (SC44, ALC42, ALC42E)

I believe your assumption is correct - When this train arrived at Fort Morgan Colorado, 301 was no longer on the train. Mike, who videos every arrival there, surmised that it was dropped off at Omaha or Lincoln, Nebraska. Another charger had been rumored to be dropped off for crew...

    Amtrak Siemens Charger locomotive (SC44, ALC42, ALC42E)

Thanks to Greylake Trains Youtube channel, ALC-42 #310 and 311 look to be on their way to Wilmington from the factory in Sacramento, courtesy of California Zephyr #6.

    Southwest Chief derailment

I think the NTSB will have a clear idea of what role the brush may or may not have played in the accident. They were going to procure an identical vehicle and re-enact the approach to the crossing. They have the forward video cameras from the train, as well as electronic recorded info from both...

A question about our layover in Chicago on our cross-country trip

I and a friend are traveling from New York City to Sacramento California at the end of August. We will arrive on the LSL on the 27th (scheduled 10am), and depart the next day at 2pm on the CZ. We have roomettes on both legs. I know that Union Station has checked bag service and says they have...

    Southwest Chief derailment

I am curious about the repair / restoration process that will occur on the 7 Superliners that were on their side - is anyone familiar with the process used in prior derailments? At the very least all the windows need replacing on the right side, and those on the left that were smashed to save...

    Southwest Chief derailment

If the NTSB's final report blasts MODOT and BNSF for dragging their heels on fixing the crossing, good luck finding a local jury that render a judgment against the dump truck company.

    Southwest Chief derailment

And the finger-pointing is underway. In this news clip it turns out the BNSF and MoDOT have conflicting stories about the plans to upgrade that particular crossing.. why am I not surprised....this is so easy to predict...

    Southwest Chief derailment

Sadly, it was two adult sisters in their 50's on a getaway trip to Chicago. One of the sister's daughter was also with them and survived. There is a GoFundMe page out there for them.

    Southwest Chief derailment

Let the finger-pointing begin... Here is a link to a TV news article. The Chariton County Commission had brought the dangers of this particular crossing to the attention of BNSF and Missouri Department of Transportation repeatedly as early as 2019. It finally made it to some state-sponsored list...

    Southwest Chief derailment

Unlike the NEC where grade crossings are infrequent and are found in urban or small towns, there are over 6000 grade crossings in the state of Missouri alone! Over 3000 of them are passive like this one, found mostly in farm areas. So removing the crossings is impractical. A possible solution...

    Southwest Chief derailment

NTSB is on the ball. They are gong to literally be in the shoes at that crossing. They will re-enact the crossing with the same type of vehicle, hopefully with the same weight of rocks it was carrying. Hopefully they can re-enact it at the same time of day - (actually not the exact moment...

    Southwest Chief derailment

Sadly, almost all safety improvements in transportation are the result of a loss of life. Almost all airplane safety improvements came after a plane crash; as a former Navy officer I can attest to the fact that safety improvements always were implemented after the loss of life. It is no...

New from NY with Pacific Surfliner questions

As a Southern Californian, I can tell you that you are in for a treat - at least from Santa Barbara. :) There is no difference on the bus with the business class ticket, but the bus is comfortable enough. Once you get onto he Surfliner, you should get some brief views of the Pacific Ocean before...

    Southwest Chief derailment

Answered my own question. Amtrak tweeted that they will provide alternate transportation for passengers on today's #3 that will originate in Kansas City instead of Chicago.

    Southwest Chief derailment

I just read that today's (6/28) #3 SWC will depart from Kansas City, not Chicago. I know that Amtrak is busy trying to get all the passengers on the derailed train to their final destinations - but in cases like this, are the folks who are booked from Chicago on the #3 on their own as far as...
